French court confirms Moroccan footballer Hakimi will stand trial for rape

VERSAILLES: A French appeals court on Friday confirmed Moroccan football star Achraf Hakimi will stand trial charged with raping a young woman. In February 2023, a woman then aged 24 told police in the Val-De-Marne region southeast of Paris that Hakimi had raped her. The Paris Saint-Germain player and captain of the Moroccan national team, whose side are playing their second World Cup match on Friday against Scotland, has consistently denied the allegations.

PSG’s injury concerns clear up with Dembélé and Hakimi healthy for Champions League final

BUDAPEST: Paris Saint-Germain’s injury worries have cleared up ahead of the Champions League final against Arsenal on Saturday. PSG forward Ousmane Dembélé has been managing a calf issue in the final weeks of the season but the reigning Ballon d’Or winner said Friday he is “100 percent ready and raring to go.” There was more concern about the health of defender Achraf Hakimi, who hasn’t played since sustaining a right thigh injury against Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League semifinals on April 28. However, the attacking right back, who was selected by Morocco for the World Cup this week, was also spotted in training on Tuesday and has been given the all-clear by PSG coach Luis Enrique, who said Hakimi was “OK and able to play tomorrow.” PSG will be looking to successfully defend the title the team won in record-breaking fashion last year with a 5-0 win over Inter Milan — the most lopsided final in the competition’s 70-year history. Dembélé was substituted in the first half of PSG’s final game in their latest title-winning campaign in the French league, a loss to Paris FC on May 17. “I wasn’t scared about missing the final,” Dembélé told a news conference at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary.

Morocco’s Hakimi among 9 picked for World Cup returning from historic 2022 squad

RABAT: Paris Saint-Germain standout Achraf Hakimi was among nine players from Morocco’s history-making 2022 World Cup squad picked Tuesday for the 2026 tournament in North America. Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi, who was hired only in March, drew heavily on the country’s diaspora in Europe where the majority of the 26 players he selected were born. Ouahbi was himself born in Belgium while Hakimi and Real Madrid forward Brahim Diaz are among five players in the squad born in Spain and whose family ties make them eligible for Morocco. Three of Morocco’s squad — Fulham defender Issa Diop, PSV Eindhoven defender Anass Salah-Eddine and 18-year-old Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi — had their change of national eligibility approved by FIFA in the past nine months. Diaz has played for Morocco since 2024 after previously representing Spain. Morocco will be based in New Jersey where they open against Brazil on June 13 in East Rutherford. Morocco then play Scotland in Massachusetts and finish Group C against Haiti on June 24 in Atlanta.

PSG’s Moroccan defender Hakimi bids to have rape case dismissed

PARIS: Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi, who is facing trial for alleged rape, will bid to have the case dismissed in court on Friday, AFP learned from a source close to the case. A hearing before the Versailles appeals court, west of Paris, will examine the case of the 27-year-old Morocco international who is to stand trial charged with raping a woman. If his appeal is rejected and the charges are not reduced to a more minor offense, the footballer will be tried on a date to be arranged. In February 2023, a woman then aged 24 told police in the Val-de-Marne area southeast of Paris that Hakimi had raped her. Hakimi was formally charged, placed under judicial supervision, and in February the decision was taken to send the case to trial. Hakimi, who played a pivotal role in Morocco becoming the first African and Arab side to reach the World Cup semifinals when they made the last four in 2022, denies any wrongdoing. Contacted by AFP, the player’s lawyer, Fanny Colin, declined to comment. During the referral hearing, Colin had argued that “the accusation rests solely on the word of a woman who obstructed all investigations, refused all medical examinations and DNA tests (and) refused to give the name of key witnesses.” The plaintiff said she met Hakimi in January 2023 through Instagram and went to his home in a taxi ordered by the player, a police source said at the time. She claimed that the player kissed her, touched her without her consent and then raped her. She said she managed to push him away and text a friend, who came to pick her up. Hakimi joined PSG in 2021 from Inter Milan after stints at Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. He is expected to be in the PSG team when the defending champions play Arsenal
