Rafael Nadal Aims To Be French Open's Oldest Champion Against Pupil Casper Ruud

Rafael Nadal will become the oldest man to win the French Open title if he defeats Casper Ruud, the Norwegian whose clay court talents he has personally helped foster. Nadal will be playing in his 14th Roland Garros final on Sunday and 30th overall at the Grand Slams. Victory will deliver a record-extending 22nd major and 14th French Open, 17 years after his title winning debut in Paris. The 36-year-od Nadal is, however, as surprised as anyone to have got this far. A chronic left foot injury which has plagued him throughout his career flared up again in Rome last month, putting a serious question mark over him even making it to the French capital.

"Hate Myself For Crying": Coco Gauff Wins New Fans As Tears Flow After French Open Final

Coco Gauff wept in her courtside chair, cried on the trophy podium and sobbed again in the press room as the US teenager admitted her French Open final defeat Saturday was a "lot to handle". Gauff, 18, and the youngest finalist at a major since Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon in 2004, was swept off court by world number one Iga Swiatek 6-1, 6-3 in just 68 minutes. After a tournament which had seen her celebrate her high school graduation and then win widespread praise for an impassioned plea to end gun violence in the United States, defeat to the Pole was a bitter end.

Billie Jean-King In "Second Class Citizens" Claim After French Open Schedule Row

Tennis pioneer Billie Jean-King waded into the French Open scheduling row on Saturday by claiming women players are treated like "second class citizens". Roland Garros organisers came under fire for putting nine men's matches in 10 night sessions this year. Tournament director Amelie Mauresmo said men's matches were more appealing, comments from which she eventually walked back on. "You've got to put them when it's prime time, and you have got to figure it out and you want to give equal opportunity to both genders," said US legend King, a founder of the WTA and vocal advocate for women's rights.

Rafael Nadal's coach Carlos Moya said Saturday he has no worries over the Spaniard's physical condition ahead of his 14th French Open final by emphasising: "It's Roland Garros and he's Rafa Nadal!". Nadal takes on Casper Ruud on Sunday with a 14th Paris title in sight and a 22nd Grand Slam crown. Should he win, the 36-year-old will become the oldest ever men's champion at Roland Garros. "We rely on the experience factor, on Rafa's game. Here, it's Roland Garros and he's Rafa Nadal!" said Moya.

French Open Champion Iga Swiatek Grew Up A "Fighter" In Warsaw

Iga Swiatek, the world number one who on Saturday won her second French Open title, has displayed a fighting spirit since her early days hammering balls on Warsaw's tennis courts. "She was a little kid who really wanted to learn how to play as quickly as possible, and once she did, what mattered most to her was winning," said Artur Szostaczko, her first coach. "She was a fighter... I knew that if it went to a super tiebreak, there was no need to worry -- Iga wouldn't crack under the pressure," the 51-year-old told AFP.
