Romanian teenager David Popovici set a world record in the 100 metres freestyle to win gold in a time of 46.86 seconds at the European Aquatic Championships in Rome on Saturday, surpassing the mark set 13 years ago in the same pool.
Seventeen-year-old David Popovici of Romania became the youngest swimmer to break the world swimming record in the men's 100-metre freestyle Saturday, beating the mark set more than 13 years ago in the same pool.
ROME — Seventeen-year-old David Popovici of Romania became the youngest swimmer to break the world record in the men's 100-meter freestyle Saturday, beating the mark set more than 13 years ago in the same pool.
The 17-year-old Romanian double world champion swam 46.86sec to slice 0.05sec off the old mark set by Brazilian Cesar Cielo in the same pool at the 2009 World Championships in the era of buoyant body suits. The fastest time in a textile suit had been 46.96 set by American Olympic champion Caeleb Dressel at the 2019 World Championships. Hungary's Kristof Milak was second on Saturday with Italy's Alessandro Miressi third.
Sasha Pardoe says getting a first taste of the bright international lights has whetted her appetite for more dizzying exploits on the big stage. The Stourbridge BMX sensation, 16, finished sixth in the European Championship final on Friday in what marked her maiden appearance at a major senior event. Ad Pardoe breezed through qualifying in the same position and while teammate and Olympic champion Charlotte Worthington crashed twice in the final to finish last, Pardoe kept herself together to pull off a rock-solid run.

Teen sensation Popovici looked in fine form earlier on Friday when he easily won his heat and delighted fans by finishing over a second ahead of Italian Lorenzo Zazzeri. Only two other swimmers managed to dip under 48sec, Kristof Milak and Alessandro Miressi in the other semi, but both were some way off 17-year-old Romanian Popovici.
Stourbridge sensation Sasha Pardoe warned she has even more tricks up her sleeve after stunning the field and soaring into the European Championship final. The 16-year-old BMX freestyle star qualified for Friday's showpiece in sixth at Munich's Olympic Park after racking up an impressive score of 59.00. Ad Teammate and Olympic champion Charlotte Worthington, 26, led the way with a brilliant 82.30 but Pardoe, competing at one of her maiden international events, was hot on the heels of some of Europe's biggest BMX big hitters.
