McLaren's Lando Norris beat Red Bull's Max Verstappen to pole position Saturday for the Singapore Grand Prix in a dramatic qualifying session red-flagged when Carlos Sainz crashed. Norris's lap of 1min 30.002sec was 0.155sec quicker than Verstappen. Lewis Hamilton was third ahead of Mercedes teammate George Russell. "It was good enough for pole and I'm happy with that, especially here in Singapore," said Norris, who is aiming to close a 59-point deficit to Verstappen in the drivers' championship. "A good feeling. I've felt good all weekend, I've felt confident, maybe not so much in qualy but we got the job done," added the Englishman.
McLaren's Lando Norris went fastest Friday to lead Ferrari pair Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz in second practice for the Singapore Grand Prix with world champion Max Verstappen struggling to 15th. The session could not have panned out much better for Englishman Norris, who trails Verstappen by 59 points at the top of the drivers' standings. The second practice in Singapore is pivotal for the teams as it is the only session which is run under the same night conditions as the race around the 4.94km Marina Bay Circuit.
Max Verstappen declared "the fight is not over" as Red Bull head to Singapore this week having been knocked off the top of the constructors' world championship for the first time in two-and-a-half years. McLaren leapt into a 20-point lead after Oscar Piastri's masterful victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was compounded by Sergio Perez's late tangle with Carlos Sainz that ended with both in the wall. McLaren's Lando Norris, who carved his way to fourth place after starting 15th on the grid, is hunting down the Dutchman Verstappen at the top of the drivers' standings.
In what will be a big boost to the sport in the country, double Formula One World Champion Mika Hakkinen flagged off Indian motorsports on a new and exciting journey by inaugurating the state-of-the-art Madras International Karting Arena (M.I.K.A.), at the iconic Madras Motor Sports Club in Chennai on Thursday. Hakkinen, on a whistle-stop visit to Chennai enroute to Singapore for the F1 Grand Prix, inaugurated the new facility at a gala ceremony that was attended by India's two former F1 drivers, Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhok.
Lando Norris recovered from his qualifying disaster by pulling off a late overtake on Max Verstappen to further cut the title lead as Oscar Piastri won a pulsating Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Indian Formula 2 driver Kush Maini suffered a massive crash at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix F2 feature race on Sunday. Starting fifth on the grid, Kush Maini's car failed to launch off the line at the start of the race. With his car stalled on the grid, a lot of cars managed to evade Maini, before he was slammed into by a car from behind causing a huge crash and immediately bringing out the red flag. Thankfully, Maini and all the drivers involved in the incident managed to walk away safe.
Title-chasing McLaren driver Lando Norris remained hopeful of success on Saturday despite qualifying in a lowly 17th place for Sunday's Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Briton, knocked out of the first qualifying session for the first time since the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix, lost his best lap when he eased off due to a yellow flag, but said he would do his best to limit damage to his championship challenge. Norris is 62 points behind three-time champion and series leader Max Verstappen of Red Bull with eight races, and three sprint races, remaining with the Dutchman qualifying in sixth place for Sunday's race.
