Billion-dollar attack: France boasts a rich scoring depth other World Cup teams only dream of
PARIS: France will have rich depth in attack at the World Cup. About a billion dollars’ worth. That’s the estimated total value of the attacking players France is expected to bring to the tournament, from two-time World Cup final scoring sensation Kylian Mbappe to rising star Desire Doue. For coach Didier Deschamps the headache is not about who to choose, but who to leave out of his starting lineup for France’s World Cup opener against Senegal on June 16. He has a huge amount of talent to complement the prolific scoring of Mbappe, who is enjoying another prolific season with Real Madrid and needs one more goal to tie Olivier Giroud as France’s all-time leading scorer with 57 goals. There’s the speed and finishing of Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele; the clinical scoring and exquisite passing of Michael Olize; the maverick skill of the technically gifted Rayan Cherki; or the fleet-footed runs of fellow newcomer Maghnes Akliouche. According to estimates from football website transfermarkt and the CIES Football Observatory, which take into account the remaining time on a players’ contract, France’s 10 attacking players are worth €855 million, which is a fraction over $1 billion. Here’s a look at the top players. Mbappe tops the list Unsurprisingly, the 27-year-old Real Madrid superstar leads the way at €200 million ($236 million). Mbappe is followed by the Bayern Munich star Olize at €140 million.
Liverpool’s Van Dijk scores late winner in 2-1 derby win over Everton
LIVERPOOL: Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk scored with a header in the 10th minute of second-half stoppage time on Sunday to snatch a 2-1 Premier League win in a thrilling climax to the first Merseyside derby at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium. Liverpool once again looked shaky and lost goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili to injury in the second half, but Van Dijk dug deep to deliver a victory that boosts their hopes of Champions League football despite a disappointing season. Liverpool stay fifth in the standings on 55 points, three behind Aston Villa with five games left to play. Everton are 10th on 47 points. The top five teams will play in next season’s Champions League. Playing in his final derby ahead of his planned departure from Liverpool in the summer, Mohamed Salah stamped his mark on the game in the 29th minute as Everton gave the ball away cheaply and Cody Gakpo picked out the Egyptian who calmly fired home past Jordan Pickford to break the deadlock. After a poor start, that goal jolted the visitors into life, but Beto brought Everton roaring back early in the second half by holding off Liverpool defender Andy Robertson before steering a low cross from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall into the net from close range. In a worrying development for coach Arne Slot, keeper Mamardashvili was injured in the incident and had to be replaced by Freddie Woodman, and the 29-year-old had some worrying moments as he stepped in to mind the net for the remainder of one of the biggest fixtures in English football.
