The final was also an emotional farewell for veteran winger Angel di Maria, who had earlier announced that he would retire from international duty after the tournament in the United States.

In 2022, Messi had done the same after Argentina defeated France in the FIFA World Cup final in Qatar. The slow-walk gesture gained popularity once again last month when Rohit celebrated in a similar fashion at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. India spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who is an ardent fan of Messi, later revealed that it was him who actually recommended Rohit to recreate the celebration.

Cheering fans, many wrapped in Argentine flags, partied around the city's iconic Obelisk in the early hours of the morning despite the low temperatures of the southern hemisphere winter. The party ended abruptly after more than four hours when police deployed water trucks and officers to clear the streets, causing a rush of people. Some hurled stones at the police but many quickly dispersed in the face of advancing riot police.
