Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White told new England boss Thomas Tuchel he deserved to be included in the German's first squad in charge after only being drafted in at late notice. The omission of the Forest captain from Tuchel's squad on Friday was a surprise given his role in firing Nuno Espirito Santo's men to third in the Premier League. However, the 25-year-old was handed a reprieve on Sunday when an injury to Cole Palmer saw Gibbs-White called up.
Heartbreaking near-misses will fire "hurting" New Zealand to their first football World Cup since 2010, their coach Darren Bazeley said on Wednesday, with the country two wins from the finals. Led by Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood, New Zealand are strong favourites to beat amateurs Fiji on Friday in Wellington and then seal qualification for 2026 by beating another regional minnow on Monday. The World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico has been expanded to 48 teams, meaning direct qualification for the best team from Oceania.
INGLEWOOD, Calif. — U.S. men's national team manager Mauricio Pochettino sought to play down the political overtones of Thursday's Concacaf Nations League semifinal against Panama, stating, «I think it's a big mistake if we talk about politics because I think people [aren't] waiting for us to talk in this way.»
New Zealand's players are carrying the hurt of failing to qualify for three straight World Cups and that pain should help them beat Fiji on the road to the 2026 finals, coach Darren Bazeley said.
Christian Eriksen said on Tuesday he is expecting to leave Manchester United at the end of the season and is ready for a new challenge. The Danish midfielder has been in and out of the team since Ruben Amorim took charge last year and his contract at Old Trafford expires in June. "I'm ready to look for something new. That suits me very well," Eriksen told reporters before Denmark's Nations League quarter-final against Portugal, saying United had not approached him about a possible extension to his deal. "That's why I assume the collaboration is over. That's how I interpret it.
Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado suffered a partial knee ligament tear in last weekend's victory at Atletico Madrid and will likely be sidelined for two months, the Spanish Liga leaders said on Tuesday. The 21-year-old has made 37 appearances in all competitions this season for Hansi Flick's side. Casado withdrew from Spain's Nations League squad. The injury forced him off in the 67th minute of Barcelona's dramatic 4-2 win at Atletico. "It has been confirmed that he has a partial tear of the lateral collateral ligament of the right knee," Barcelona said in a statement.
MIAMI: A tennis union co-founded by Novak Djokovic on Tuesday announced a series of legal actions aimed at the sport’s governing bodies, alleging “anti-competitive restraints and abusive practices.” The Professional Tennis Players’ Association (PTPA) said it was suing both tour organizers, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). The International Tennis Federation (ITF), and International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) were also named as defendants in a series of actions in the United States, United Kingdom and the European Union. Both the ATP and WTA responded by vowing to defend themselves against the claims with the men’s tour saying the PTPA has “consistently chosen division and distraction through misinformation over progress.” The PTPA was set up by Djokovic and Canadian Vasek Pospisil in 2020.
