DOHA: England crashed out of the World Cup against an all too familiar backdrop of heroic failure and agonizing over yet another crucial missed penalty in a major championship. But as the Three Lions packed their bags on Sunday there was much about the circumstances of their exit that felt like a break from the past.
Steve Borthwick insists his focus is on Leicester's opening European game this weekend and not on speculation linking him to becoming England's new head coach. Tigers director of rugby Borthwick is the favourite to succeed Eddie Jones, who was sacked on Tuesday after overseeing England's worst year of results since 2008. "We play Ospreys on Sunday night and that's what I'm focused upon," Borthwick said at his pre-match press conference for Leicester's Heineken Champions Cup opener. "That's what my team is focused upon and that's what we've been focused upon all week. "Within Leicester Tigers and this team here, there is no talk here of anything other than the game on Sunday night." Borthwick - who pledged he would be in the Leicester dugout for their second Champions Cup game against Clermont Auvergne on December 17 - added: "I don't think anyone can possibly doubt how committed I have been since the minute I walked through this door to give the best I can for this team. "That is my intention again this week to get the performance we want. "All these things that go on around a team, your job is always to be focused on what you need to do. "Since I've come in here my focus is on what we need to get better today. "We have frameworks in place to make sure how we think about how we train, how we prepare, and we will continue to do that this week."
While much of the focus has been on how to find a way to halt France star Kylian Mbappe, England full-back Kieran Trippier has underlined the importance of foiling former neighbour and team-mate Antoine Griezmann.
DOHA : France will not focus on any particular player when they take on England in a mouth-watering World Cup quarter-final on Saturday, defender Ibrahima Konate said.
AL RAYYAN, Qatar : Speculation regarding the future of Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo and his outburst following his substitution against South Korea were in sharp focus on Monday ahead of their World Cup last-16 game against Switzerland.
A consistent Shikhar Dhawan and a supremely talented KL Rahul will battle it out for the opener's slot even as a top-heavy Indian batting line-up will aim for transformation and show more intent against a gutsy Bangladesh in the three-match ODI series, starting Sunday. Throw a fabulously consistent young turk Shubman Gill (rested for this series) into the mix, and coach Rahul Dravid will struggle to fit in all the boxes of this jigsaw puzzle called Indian top-order. The focus for the next one year will primarily be on ODIs and just like the T20Is, India's approach in the 50-over format needs a sea change.
AL RAYYAN, Qatar: United States coach Gregg Berhalter insisted his team is focused only on Tuesday's Group B showdown with Iran as he sidestepped the political fracas around the game caused by decades of enmity between the nations.
