World No.5 India are placed in a tough Pool D alongside England (world No. 6), Spain (world No.8) and Wales in the showpiece event to be jointly hosted by Bhubaneswar and Rourkela from January 13 to 29 next year. The Indians drew 4-4 against England and beat Wales 4-1 en route to a silver medal-winning effort in this year's Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
Wales in Pool D, as the draw for the 2023 FIH Men's Hockey World Cup was held here on Thursday. Ranked world number five, India are the highest-ranked team in their pool. The group-stage winners will advance straight to the quarterfinals while the teams placed second and third will have to play crossover matches, which will decided their stay in the tournament. In Pool A, Commonwealth Games champions Australia are clubbed along with Argentina, France and Chile. Pool B includes reigning world champion Belgium, South Korea, fourth-ranked Germany and Japan. The Netherlands, New Zealand, Malaysia and Chile are placed in Pool C.
World Cup 2023. The FIH and Hockey India delegations, during their visit to the steel city, inspected the infrastructure at the stadium and other aspects like connectivity, logistics, accommodation, city beautification and security arrangements with senior state government officers. They appreciated the support extended by Odisha towards development of hockey after sports secretary R Vineel Krishna made a presentation on the preparations.

They also inaugurated a training centre there and took stock of activities going on at Rourkela Airport, which will be used as a transit hub for the players, staff and others. FIH acting president Seif Ahmed, congratulated Odisha and Hockey India for the work that they had done.
Harmanpreet who was part of the silver medal-winning team at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this year, and also won bronze at the Asian Champions Trophy Dhaka in 2021, won the top award and his first in the 2020-21 edition. "It's a huge honour for me to be nominated for the FIH Player of the Year Award yet again. I have always tried to give my best and contribute to the team's success and it feels great when your hard work is recognized through the FIH Star Awards," Harmanpreet was quoted as saying in a press release.
Indian team vice-captain Harmanpreet was named along with two Belgians in Arthur de Sloover and Tom Boon, Niklas Wellen of Germany and Thierry Brinkman of the Netherlands for the FIH Men's Player of the Year award. There is no Indian in the list of players nominated for the FIH Women's Player of the Year award. Harmanpreet had also won the coveted award last year when the Indian players and coaches swept all the honours after their historic Olympic Games performance in Tokyo where the men's team won a bronze for the first time after 41 years while the women's side lost in the bronze-medal match.
India are placed in Pool B along side Canada, Japan and South Africa in the eight-nation tournament, a qualifier for next season's FIH Pro League. Pool A consists of Korea, Italy, hosts Spain, and Ireland.
Commonwealth Games (CWG) final in Birmingham and said the Indian team will look to work on the teething problems ahead of the upcoming FIH Hockey Pro League. India had to settle for a silver medal in Birmingham after going down 0-7 to Australia in the final last month. The squad is now training its focus on the Pro League games in Bhubaneshwar in Odisha next month.
