LOS ANGELES, USA: US President Donald Trump will attend the World Cup final in New Jersey on July 19 and present the trophy to the winners, FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced on Tuesday. “We will be together with the president enjoying the final and handing the trophy to the winner, of course, together,” Infantino told Fox and Friends. Infantino has cultivated a close relationship with Trump, awarding him with a newly created FIFA peace prize at the World Cup draw in Washington last year. The decision to present the trophy jointly follows the controversy surrounding the presentation of the Club World Cup to English club Chelsea after their victory over Paris Saint-Germain in New Jersey last year. Trump handed the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James, but then failed to leave the stage meaning he initially took part in the team’s celebrations alongside bemused players.
HOUSTON, USA: Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score in six different World Cup tournaments on Tuesday by getting two goals in Portugal’s 5-0 win over Uzbekistan. The 41-year-old Ronaldo made history in the sixth minute when João Cancelo crossed it to him and he shot with his right foot to make it 1-0. He ran toward the bench and celebrated with his teammates after the score. He scored again in the 39th minute when he got a pass from Bruno Fernandes and shot with his right foot just inside the near post to make the score 3-0. Ronaldo was named man of the match. The goals make him the second-oldest player to score at a World Cup behind Cameroon forward Roger Milla, who was 42 when he scored at the 1994 tournament in the United States. Ronaldo’s goals come after he was criticized for failing to score in Portugal’s 1-1 draw against Congo in the team’s opening match. Ronaldo and Argentina captain Lionel Messi became the only men in history to play in six World Cup tournaments this year. Ronaldo’s scoring streak started in his debut in 2006 and he also netted goals in 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022. While he shares the record for most tournaments with Messi, he stands alone in scoring a goal in each edition after Messi failed to score a goal at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Ronaldo’s goals Tuesday gave him 10 career goals in the tournament.

WASHINGTON: The US is easing its restrictions on Iran’s World Cup team, allowing the squad to travel into the country two days before their next match, the US Department of Homeland Security said Tuesday. The team will still be required to leave after Friday’s match in Seattle, a department spokesperson said. A spokesperson for the Iran Football Federation confirmed that the team will leave their base camp in Tijuana, Mexico, on Wednesday for Seattle. “This was planned on our end,” Andrew Giuliani, the executive director of the White House FIFA Task Force, told The Associated Press. “We were going to look at how the first two movements went, and if they went smoothly, we would extend the extra day in light of the longer travel time.” Iran’s squad have complained about the travel restrictions levied on the team, and the challenges the team have faced since the outbreak of war.
GUADALAJARA, Mexico: It’s been goals galore so far at the World Cup. The tournament has been one of the highest-scoring in history so far and produced nearly 25% more scoring than the same span of games in the previous World Cup. One reason for the increase in scoring might be the ball that FIFA is using for this tournament. FIFA says the ball has been designed with deep seams to produce “optimal in-flight stability,” and players and coaches say it has been rocketing toward goalkeepers at a high velocity. GUADALAJARA: Colombia’s final training session before their World Cup game against Congo was suspended because of a storm on Monday. Colombia players were practicing at a training center in Guadalajara when they were told to take shelter. They had practiced for less than 30 minutes when the session had to be suspended. The players finished the session in a gym, the Colombian soccer federation said. Congo practiced in the morning in the United States before traveling to Guadalajara later Monday. It will be the second Group K game for both teams. Colombia opened with a 3-1 win over Uzbekistan, while Congo played to a 1-1 draw with Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal.
LOS ANGELES, USA: England will aim to become the latest of the World Cup big guns to book their place in the knockout rounds on Tuesday as Portugal attempt to kickstart their campaign after a lacklustre opening draw. A day after Argentina and France sailed into the last 32, England face Ghana in Group L knowing that victory will see them safely into the next phase of the tournament. England launched their campaign last week with a stylish 4-2 win over Croatia, a result that has given the Three Lions camp fresh belief as they chase a first major championship win in 60 years. With captain Harry Kane scoring twice and Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham netting, England midfielder Declan Rice believes Thomas Tuchel’s squad should be a match for any team in the tournament. Rice said Monday the challenge for England will be reproducing the swashbuckling attacking display that marked their second-half performance against Croatia. “We know as players the level, we know what’s required, and that second-half performance was probably the benchmark for us in terms of having to start the game at that level,” Rice said. “We believe that if we can do that from the opening minute, with the players that we also have to come on and finish the game, we can beat any opponent in the world. “We want to be confident in our abilities and what we can do on the pitch.” England’s German manager Tuchel meanwhile says his team are already embracing the pressure that comes with a World Cup campaign. “There are emotions involved and you can at some point feel the tension and feel the pressure.
