Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo did the damage late on in Sydney as England shattered Australian dreams Wednesday with a clinical 3-1 win to set up a Women's World Cup final against Spain. The Lionesses had stumbled at the same stage twice before but the European champions made no mistake this time to silence most of the 75,000 crowd and reach the final for the first time. They took the lead nine minutes before the break with Manchester United's Ella Toone unleashing a rocket just inside the box with the outside of her boot.
A superb display ensured England reached their first World Cup final, dumping the old enemy and host nation Australia out of the tournament in the process.
Ella Toone drove England's opener into the corner of the net in the 36th minute to silence the crowd of 75,784 but Australia captain Sam Kerr brought them back into it with a stunning run and strike from 25 metres out in the 64th minute.
World Rugby has come under pressure to act after Owen Farrell’s red card against Wales was overturned in a decision that has caused uproar across the game.
Tournament co-hosts Australia will be banking on the huge home support and Sam Kerr starting when they take on European champions England in the second of the Women's World Cup semi-finals.
