PARIS : First-time Olympian Kristen Faulkner of the U.S. was by no means the favourite to win the women's road race on the Paris streets on Sunday but in a three-way cycling strategy poker game the former venture capitalist rode away with the gold medal.
Megan Armitage finished 35th in the women's road race in Paris, 7:35mins behind gold medal winner Kristen Faulkner of the USA.
Ben Healy came up short in a battle for bronze after a gutsy display in the men's 273km road race won by Belgium's Remco Evenepoel, with Frenchman Valentin Madouas taking silver.
Remco Evenepoel became the first rider to sweep the Olympic men's road race and time trial on Saturday, relentlessly attacking over three climbs of Montmartre and building such a lead on the run-in to the finish at the Pont d'Iena that the Belgian rider was able to overcome a mechanical problem in the final kilometres.
Olympic organisers cancelled part of the triathlon training in the River Seine planned for Saturday, saying heavy rain was likely to have made the waterway too polluted to swim in. Only the running and cycling elements of the triathlon mixed relay training will take place, Paris 2024 organisers announced in a statement. Training was scrapped due to "the heavy rain over the last two nights, which have been particularly intense upstream of Paris, and the expected drop in water quality as a result."
