Exclusive: 'Complete focus on my wrestling career, coach Shako wasn't pushed out' - Bajrang Punia on his comeback after injury, the Olympic bronze & more

Bajrang Punia, debilitated and frustrated by his knee injury, was warming up for his 65kg freestyle bronze-medal bout. It was the biggest stage of them all -- the Olympics. He had landed in Tokyo virtually on one leg, carrying a knee injury he suffered in Russia barely a month or so before the Games. But his valor had shone through in the Japanese capital. Bajrang, though, lost in the semis to Azerbaijan's Haji Aliyev. Now, it was either an Olympic medal or an agonizing wait of another three years. With that playing on his mind, Bajrang virtually decided to put his career on the line. "Remove the (knee) brace for now, we'll take care of the injury later," he told the physio. Summoning every inch of his energy reserves, Bajrang beat Kazakhstan's Daulet Niyazbekov 8-0 to win an Olympic bronze medal. But the effort took its toll, on his knees. For more than six months after that, Bajrang had to be in rehab mode, and returned only late last month for the selection trials ahead of the Asian Championships beginning April 19. Ahead of his departure for the tournament in Mongolia, TimesofIndia.com visited the Sports Authority of India centre in Sonepat, where Bajrang was part of the national camp for the Indian men's wrestling team. A candid Bajrang sat down for an exclusive interview with TimesofIndia.com on the sidelines of the arena , taking questions on his life on and around the mat, and also on what it's like to be a newly-married man (Bajrang married wrestler Sangeeta Phogat of the famed Phogat wrestling family in November 2020).

Why victory over Hibs at Hampden shows this is a special group of Hearts players who deserve to be cherished

Always a good piece of advice for our brittle existence on this planet but one which is often left unheeded. It feels like that is especially true of football fans. We tend to get carried away with the good times and subconsciously believe they’ll last forever. Nothing ever does and, unless you’re a big fat glory hunter, for the most part the experience of following a club is a seemingly never-ending cycle of fluctuations. For instance, one year you can find your club relegated despite plenty of investment. Then two years later you can finish in third place, qualify for eight games in European football and book a place in the Scottish Cup final for the third time in four years.

Opinion: Like it or not, Yves Lampaert’s crash with fan at Paris-Roubaix is part of bike racing

Had Yves Lampaert been leading Paris-Roubaix when he was taken out by a spectator, the witch-hunt would surely have already begun. As it was, the Belgian had been in possession of a shot at the podium. At most.

Why Wout van Aert needs to add a ‘wallop’ to his attacking repertoire after Paris-Roubaix near-miss

Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) needs to add a “wallop” to his attacking repertoire on the bike if he wants to avoid more near-misses in cycling’s biggest races, according to The Breakaway cast. The Dutchman finished a distant second to compatriot Dylan van Baarle (Ineos Grenadiers) at Paris-Roubaix after playing the role of chaser on a difficult outing in France. Ad/> He always faced an uphill battle after being distanced by an opportunistic early move from Ineos which splintered the peloton in two with over 200km remaining.

‘We’ve never seen anything like that’ – Bradley Wiggins lauds ‘perfect’ Ineos at Paris-Roubaix

Eurosport expert Bradley Wiggins applauded Ineos Grenadiers after a heroic team display catapulted Dylan van Baarle to victory at Paris-Roubaix. Beginning with Michal Kwiatkowski, who exploited the crosswinds to force a huge split in the bunch long before the cobbles were even in sight, every Ineos rider contributed to their first victory in the Hell of the North. Ad/> The septet of Van Baarle, Kwiatkowski, Filippo Ganna, Luke Rowe, Magnus Sheffield, Ben Turner and Cameron Wurf ensured pre-race favourites Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) were rarely in the frame after cutting them off in the early move.

‘He’s hit a spectator!’ – Disaster as fan wipes out Yves Lampaert in horror incident at Paris-Roubaix

Yves Lampaert (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team) had his podium dreams extinguished at Paris-Roubaix after he collided with a spectator in a shocking incident. Ad/> “Oh my word, oh no! He’s hit a spectator,” cried Rob Hatch on Eurosport commentary.
