Tejaswin Shankar To Compete In CWG, Entry Cleared By CGF On Request Of IOA

Indian high jumper Tejaswin Shankar was on Friday cleared to compete at the upcoming Commonwealth Games after the organisers accepted his entry on the request of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), ending a month-long drama surrounding his participation. The organisers had initially rejected Shankar's late entry but the IOA has now got confirmation from the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and Birmingham CWG organisers about acceptance of his entry after a Delegate Registration Meeting (DRM).

Star shuttlers, including P V Sindhu, will chase individual gold medals but doubles would also under the spotlight as India would aim to retain the mixed team title and continue their consistent run at the Commonwealth Games. Two Commonwealth Games-bound athletes, sprinter S Dhanalakshmi and triple jumper Aishwarya Babu, have returned positive for banned drugs, as dope shame struck Indian athletics just a few days ahead of the multi-sport event. Both have been ruled out of the upcoming July 28 to August 8 Birmingham Games and have been handed provisional suspensions. The 24-year-old Dhanalakshmi returned positive for a banned steroid in a dope test conducted abroad by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) of the World Athletics.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday highlighted the struggle, grit and determination of the Commonwealth Games-bound athletes in a light-hearted interaction as he urged them to forget expectations and focus only on giving their best at the Birmingham multi-sport event. World championships bronze medallist Lakshya Sen on Saturday said the first few matches at the Commonwealth Games would be crucial to find his rhythm back after being out of action for a month due to fitness issues. Sen, a member of India's Thomas Cup winning team, did not play any tournament after the Indonesia Open, where he lost to compatriot HS Prannoy in the second-round clash. Sen had some shoulder issues and underwent rehab for about two weeks to recover.
