During the Algerian War of Independence, Mansourah was one of thousands of communities the colonial French rulers turned into resettlement camps. These forced removals affected nearly half the rural Algerian population, and at the end of the war, more than two million people were dispersed between two thousand "regroupement camps" created by the French army. The deeply moving documentary sees the director take her father, Malek, back to Mansourah – a village he fled as a 10-year-old boy in 1960. It unravels her father's story but also the memories of those displaced as well as the inhabitants who saw their village turn into a camp they could not escape from.
We also discuss the breathtaking and much-anticipated film "Notre-Dame On Fire" from French director Jean-Jacques Annaud. It focuses on the night firefighters fought to save Paris's beloved Notre-Dame Cathedral from the flames.
The French culture minister has announced a €1 million aid package to help Ukrainian artists and Russian dissident artists who want to come to France. Sinkevych was asked to be the president of the Series Mania festival which takes place in the northern city of Lille in March when the war broke out.
We also discuss the reaction of Demna Gvasalia, the Georgian-born director of French fashion house Balenciaga, to the war in Ukraine. When he was 12 years old, he was one of 250,000 Georgians forced from their homes by Abkhazian separatists during Georgia's civil war, crossing the Caucasus mountains with his family. Gvasalia says the war has "triggered the pain of a past trauma" he has carried in him since 1993, when "the same thing happened" in his home country.
Meanwhile, a charity concert is taking place this Tuesday evening in Paris in support of the Ukrainian people. Two of France's big broadcasters are hosting the event called "Unite for Ukraine", with proceeds going towards humanitarian efforts. Among the performers are Carla Bruni, Indochine, Jane Birkin and Angélique Kidjo.
About six years ago, Mark started working on a collection of portraits of Ukrainians called "Stop Tanks with Books". He hopes people looking at his book will forge a kind of emotional connection and see a version of themselves in these portraits.
