When Sanjiv Suryavanshi sold his farmland to fund his 10-year-old son Vaibhav's cricketing aspirations, little did he know that within three years the boy would be scripting history. During the second and final day of the IPL mega auction in Jeddah, Vaibhav, at 13 years and eight months, became the youngest cricketer ever to be picked by a franchise as Rajasthan Royals bought him for Rs 1.10 crore. Sanjiv, who owned farmland in his native Motipur village which is 15 km from Samastipur town in Bihar, was lost for words.

The IPL 2025 mega auction saw 182 players sold for a whopping combined fee of Rs 639.15 crore. Rishabh Pant shattered the record of the most expensive purchase, going to Lucknow Super Giants, while Shreyas Iyer was not far behind, moving to Punjab Kings. Indian players were sold at a premium, with Indian fast bowlers doing well on Day 2 of the auction. Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami celebrated his Rs 10 crore deal with Sunrisers Hyderabad with a three-wicket burst that carried Bengal to an eight-wicket win over Hyderabad in a Group A match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on Monday. Shami, who is playing his first white ball tournament after last year's 50-over World Cup, took three for 21 in 3.3 overs as Bengal bowled out Hyderabad for 137 in 18.3 overs. He received good support from Karan Lal and Shahbaz Ahmed who bagged two wickets apiece. India batter Tilak Varma made a 44-ball 57 (5x4, 1x6) but he could not guide his side to a bigger total. In reply, Bengal faced little trouble in scaling down the target in 17.5 overs.
