Former India middle-order batter Ajay Jadeja on Saturday defended head coach Gautam Gambhir from the criticism he has received following the 0-3 drubbing against New Zealand, saying it's "unfair" given the short time he has been in the new role. Gambhir, the hero of the 2011 World Cup title triumph, took over the reins of the India team in July after Rahul Dravid's tenure ended. Following a bright start against Sri Lanka in the T20I series, India lost the ODI series to the home side. The Test team then thrashed Bangladesh 2-0 before a nightmare outing against New Zealand put Gambhir under massive scrutiny.
Teen prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi's struggles against seam bowling was apparent during his brief stay as India U-19 comprising IPL contract owners struggled badly during their 43-run defeat to Pakistan in the Youth Asia Cup in Dubai on Saturday. After muscular left-hander Shahzaib Khan thrashed Indian bowlers to submission with 10 sixes in his 159 off 147 balls, Indians were never in sight of victory target of 282. They eventually got out for 238 in 47.1 overs but rising youngsters like Suryavanshi (1), Ayush Mhatre (20), C Andre Siddarth (15) and left-arm spinner Hardik Raj (0/47 in 6 overs) won't be amused with their performance.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is in danger of losing the hosting rights of the 2025 Champions Trophy after refusing the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s demands of a hybrid model. Despite BCCI's firm refusal to send its team to Pakistan owing to security concerns, the PCB has time and time again refused to accept there demands. While the ICC is trying its best to sort out the issue, both the PCB and BCCI have not been able to achieve common ground. During Friday's inconclusive meeting, the ICC has warned the PCB to either accept the 'Hybrid' model of hosting for next year's Champions Trophy or be prepared to be ousted from the event.
Former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja has heaped praise on Virat Kohli following his stunning century in Perth, which played a crucial role in India's 295-run victory over Australia in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Jadeja's comments came in the wake of Kohli's remarkable performance that silenced critics and reaffirmed his status as one of cricket's modern-day greats. "Doubters can rest in peace... The name itself says it all. If there were doubters, they can rest in peace. Geniuses aren't born overnight," Jadeja told ANI, emphasizing Kohli's exceptional talent and ability to rise to the occasion. Kohli's century in Perth was not just a display of his technical prowess but also a testament to his resilience and determination. After facing criticism and skepticism from some quarters, Kohli's return to form with a heroic ton was a fitting response to his detractors.
South Africa climbed to second place in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings with a commanding 233-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test in Durban on Saturday. Marco Jansen was the standout performer for the hosts, delivering exceptional match figures of 11/86. He was named Player of the Match for his impactful performance. With a superb all-round display, South Africa displaced Australia from the second spot and moved closer to securing a place in the WTC final next year in London. Currently, South Africa hold second position with a points percentage of 59.26%, having won five and lost three of their nine matches. The Proteas trail India, who remain at the top with a points percentage of 61.11% from nine wins and five losses in 15 matches.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is ready to accept the hybrid model for the Champions Trophy 2025, according to a report by India Today. India refused to travel to Pakistan for the competition citing security concerns and several media reports suggested that the International Cricket Council (ICC) wanted Pakistan to agree to a hybrid model of hosting. However, the report claims that the PCB has put forward three conditions in this scenario. While nothing official has been announced by either ICC or PCB, the report claimed that India will be playing their games in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
South Africa had to overcome determined resistance from Sri Lanka's batsmen before winning the first Test by 233 runs at Kingsmead on Saturday. Set a massive 516 runs to win, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 282. Left-arm fast bowler Marco Jansen, the destroyer in Sri Lanka's record-low first innings of 42, took four for 73 to finish with match figures of 11 for 86. In contrast to the first innings, the tourists made the South Africans work for their wickets on Saturday. Dinesh Chandimal (83) and captain Dhananjaya de Silva (59) put on 95 for the sixth wicket and kept South Africa in the field for most of the morning after resuming at 101 for five.
