India did produce a complete performance in all three departments of the first ODI against West Indies but a couple of issues still continue to pose questions on their supremacy in white-ball cricket. Apart from the lack of a consistent performer in the middle-order, India have been struggling to find an extra bowling option who can give four-five overs when needed in an ODI. Unlike past teams, none of the current Indian top five batters are known for rolling their arms over. Suryakumar Yadav, whom India are trying to build as a finisher in white-ball cricket, said he is ready to put his hand up for a few overs whenever the team requires.
The Indian cricket team is taking on West Indies in the 2nd ODI at Ahmedabad on Thursday and find themselves in a spot of bother after the fall of three early wickets. Captain Rohit Sharma, his new opening partner Rishabh Pant and number 3 Virat Kohli have all been sent back to the pavillion and the duo of Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul are trying to rebuild the innings.
South Africa young batter Dewald Brevis has said that it is a huge honour for him to be called "Baby AB de Villiers". Brevis' heroics at the U19 World Cup have led to comparisons with Proteas legend AB de Villiers. The style and class of the youngster have seen him dubbed 'Baby AB', something he is also extremely flattered about. "To be called Baby AB...I don't even know what to say. I am nowhere near what AB de Villiers was. He is a guy I grew up idolising, he was my role model from the first time I watched cricket. But I love being called that, it's a real honour and surreal," the official website of Cricket South Africa (CSA) quoted Brevis as saying.
Rohit Sharma remained at third place but closed in on teammate Virat Kohli, who also held on to his second spot, in the latest ICC men's ODI batting rankings on Wednesday. Rohit gained some valuable points from his fifty in the first ODI of the three-match series against the West Indies and he now has 807 rating points as against 828 of Kohli. Pakistan skipper Babar Azam continued to hold on to the top spot, while his compatriot Fakhar Zaman and England batter Joe Root broke into the top 10.
Dipika Pallikal is back on the court after four years, a break she needed to start a family and to do "something different" in her life with her career graph "stagnating". Blessed with twins last October, the 31-year-old has been training hard for the last couple of months with the focus on the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games later this year. Pallikal, who established an interior designing business in her time away from the game, is aiming to create more history at the two multi-sporting events. She is expected to take part in the doubles events in the Birmingham Games before gradually increasing her workload to also play singles in the Hangzhou Games.
Sylhet Sunrisers' skipper Ravi Bopara, who was caught changing the condition of the ball in the ongoing edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), has been charged with a fine of 75 per cent of his match fee and three demerit points. Bopara was earlier punished with a three-match ban from the match referee after the incident came to light on Monday during the match against Khulna Tigers. On Tuesday, he further appealed and the BPL technical committee reduced the match referee's ruling.
England’s post-Ashes cull took another twist on Tuesday when James Anderson and Stuart Broad were left out of next month’s tour of the West Indies.
