DUBAI: Life has been a whirlwind for Lebanese tennis player Hady Habib these past few months, but you would not know that by speaking to him, given his calm and collected demeanor.
Virat Kohli allayed all fears of a dwindling form with a record 51st ODI century on Sunday, that too against arch-rivals Pakistan at the Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai. After a below par outing in Australia, that had fans and media question his future in international cricket, Virat Kohli showed that he may not be going anywhere for at least a while now. Against Pakistan, Virat Kohli scored 100* off 111 runs and hit the winning runs with a boundary.
Indian batting maestro Virat Kohli admitted that his trademark cover drive puts him in a "catch-22" situation as it has been a weakness lately but playing the shot gives him control over the innings. Kohli crafted a memorable unbeaten century against Pakistan, steering India to a six-wicket win. His 111-ball masterclass featured the cover drive prominently, a shot that has in recent time led to his downfall but remains a signature weapon in his arsenal. "It's a 'catch-22'. I mean, it's (cover drive) kind of been my weakness as well over the years, but I've scored a lot of runs on that shot," Kohli said in a video posted by BCCI.
In cricket-crazed Pakistan's biggest city, cafe owner Moiz Umer said customers asked him Sunday to change the TV channel to "avoid the humiliation" of witnessing their Champions Trophy defeat to arch-rivals India. "For large parts of the Indian innings, a good number of people turned their backs to the match -- facing their friends instead of the screen, such was the disappointment," said the 45-year-old in the city of Karachi. Fans that didn't look away watched India outclass Pakistan with a convincing six-wicket victory, chasing down 242 with 45 balls to spare and pushing the hosts to the verge of elimination after just two matches.
The backlash due to the poor show in the Champions Trophy, including the humiliating defeat to India, hit the Pakistan team hard and its support staff led by former fast bowler Aaqib Javed is set to be overhauled, according to a cricket Board source. Pakistan lost to arch-rivals India by six wickets in Dubai on Sunday, after their 60-run defeat to New Zealand in the Champions Trophy opener in Karachi on February 19.
Virat Kohli's unwavering resilience over the past six months, capped by his unbeaten century against Pakistan, has convinced former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu that the "once-in-a-generation" player will continue playing for another two to three years. Kohli roared back to form in sensational fashion, smashing his 51st ODI ton to help India secure a six-wicket victory over arch-rivals Pakistan, all but sealing their place in the Champions Trophy semifinals. "Character is not made in a crisis, it is exhibited. This is a man with pedigree, with passion. And after this 100, I can say it with conviction that this man is playing for the next 2 or 3 years and he is getting another 10 or 15 hundreds," Sidhu said on JioHotstar.
Former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan presented all-rounder Axar Patel with the 'Fielder of the Match' medal following India's thumping win over Pakistan in their ICC Champions Trophy match on Sunday. Following the win, India fielding coach T Dilip congratulated the team for their fielding performance and introduced three contenders for the medal: Shreyas Iyer, Axar and Ravindra Jadeja. Shikhar, who is in Dubai in his capacity as the tournament's ambassador, was then introduced by Dilip. He was welcomed warmly by his ex-teammates, particularly Jadeja and Hardik Pandya, who gave him a hug.
India produced a stunning performance - both with bat and ball - to completely outplay and beat Pakistan by six wickets in their Champions Trophy 2025 encounter in Dubai on Sunday. Pakistan never looked in control of the match and a brilliant century from Virat Kohli meant that India all but booked their spot in the semifinals. It was a disappointing show from the Pakistan side and they were criticised heavily by both experts and fans. In a video going viral on social media, a Pakistan fan was seen switching to the Indian jersey as his side slumped to a heavy defeat. He was initially wearing a Pakistan jersey but as the match headed towards the result, he decided to don the Indian colours.
