MUMBAI : Mahela Jayawardene will step down as Mumbai Indians head coach and take on a bigger role at the franchise due to its increasing international presence, the Indian Premier League side said on Wednesday.

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians (MI) on Wednesday elevated former players Mahela Jayawardene and Zaheer Khan to new roles of global head of performance and global head of cricket development respectively. The appointments were part of MI's central expansion plan. According to an MI statement, Jayawardene will be providing senior leadership to the group's cricket operations worldwide, including overall strategic planning, the creation of an integrated global high-performance eco-system, as well as responsibility for each team's coaching and support structures.
James Anderson and Stuart Broad will be part of the squad for next year's Ashes series against Australia, coach Brendon McCullum said. Sri Lanka legend Mahela Jayawardene has stepped down from the head coach role in Mumbai Indians as he has been appointed Global Head of Performance by the franchise. Zaheer Khan, who was the Director of Cricket Operations, has also been given a new role. The former India pacer will now be MI's Global Head of Cricket Development. The two form the central team for the franchise's "growing global cricket footprint", Mumbai Indians said in an official release.
