SEOUL: The English Premier League produced its first serious piece of controversy of the new season on the last day of September. Tottenham Hotspur’s thrilling last-minute win over Liverpool was dramatic but almost forgotten because of what happened earlier in the game with VAR - the Video Assistant Referee - at the centre.
South Africa’s record-breaking win over Sri Lanka in their Cricket World Cup opener on Saturday was a show of strength from their sizzling top six, but if they are to end their tournament curse in the 50-over format, their bowling unit needs to fire.
Absence of a global silverware in the cabinet always gives one a sense of emptiness, no matter how deified you are as a player. Sachin Tendulkar felt that hollowness till the 2011 triumph happened, Lionel Messi had to wait for his piece of glory till 2022. Rohit Sharma too is a champion player, but his craving for a 50-over ICC title is quite evident when he termed this World Cup as an “unfinished business” for him. Rohit has won two ICC events – 2007 T20 World Cup and 2013 ICC Champions Trophy but everyone knows that in cricket, the real deal is the 50-over World Cup.
Shubman Gill was ruled out of the Indian cricket team's opening match at the Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia due to illness and wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan replaced him in the playing XI on Sunday. Gill was reportedly suffering from dengue and India skipper Rohit Sharma confirmed that the youngster was not able to recover in time for the match. During the toss, Rohit said that they wait till the last minute for Gill's fitness report but it will be Ishan who will open the batting with him on Sunday.
New Zealand star batter Kane Williamson has been ruled of New Zealand's second match of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup against the Netherlands. In the pre-match press conference, New Zealand head coach Gary Stead updated on the status of Williamson's injury "Kane's been progressing very well, I think the fielding is still the element for him that he's just got to get a little bit higher, and he gets a little bit more trust in his body," New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said as quoted by ICC on Sunday.
Team India were asked to bowl first by Australia in their opening match of the ODI World Cup 2023 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday. At the toss, India captain Rohit Sharma confirmed the absence of star batter Shubman Gill, citing illness. Gill is reportedly suffering from dengue, but the team management didn't rule him out for the match against Australia initially. However, Rohit revealed Gill is still recovering from his illness, and also revealed his opening partner for the game.
Veteran spinner Nathan Lyon has said he is ready to reinforce Australia's spin department if his services are required during the ongoing Cricket World Cup in India. Australia could face a few challenges in the spin department as Ashton Agar is missing from the ICC event due to a calf tear he suffered during the T20Is in South Africa last month. With only one specialist spinner in Adam Zampa and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell as the other option, Australia could feel the absence of a slow bowler, especially in spin-friendly conditions in India.
