After a forgettable Cricket World Cup, the Pakistan cricket team went through some big changes on Wednesday. India opener Shubman Gill said he had been inspired by the "hunger" of Virat Kohli after the two batsmen starred in the 70-run World Cup semi-final win over New Zealand on Wednesday. The unbeaten tournament hosts piled up 397-4 with Kohli compiling a record-breaking 50th one-day international hundred during an innings of 117 as he surpassed the mark of 49 centuries he had shared with retired India great Sachin Tendulkar. Shreyas Iyer piled on the agony for New Zealand with a rapid 105 and Gill, who finished on 80 not out, might have had a hundred as well if he had not earlier retired hurt at the Wankhede Stadium.
India's star batter KL Rahul continues to rise through the ranks. He has shown great adaptablity and that has strengthened the team's middle-order. On Sunday, Rahul continued to play his role to near perfection as he scored 102 runs off only 64 balls, playing a crucial role in helping India get past the score of 400 against Netherlands in Bengaluru. Former Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik heaped praises on Rahul and termed him the best number 5 batter in the world.
Mohammed Shami dismantled New Zealand's chase with a wonderful seven-wicket haul, and the Indian pacer on Wednesday said he was trying to take the pace off the ball to force the batters into their shots. With 23 scalps in six matches, Shami has currently registered most wickets in World Cup 2023.
As India took on New Zealand in their Cricket World Cup 2023 semi-final at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Virat Kohli made the headlines by breaking Sachin Tendulkar's world record by scoring his 50th ODI hundred. In a chat with the broadcaster after the match, however, Iyer admitted that he wasn't happy with the outside noise over his failures in the first couple of games. Iyer had also lashed out a reporter in a press conference during this World Cup when asked about his struggles against the short ball. But, is glad to have silence all those with a century in the semi-final.
