MILAN: Strange things happen when Inter Milan plays Barcelona in the Champions League semifinals. The last time the two teams met in the final four of Europe’s elite club competition, in 2010, Barcelona had to make a 15-hour journey by bus to Milan after an ash cloud caused by the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull shut down air space. Barcelona lost that first leg 3-1 and a stout defensive performance by Inter in the return match saw it advance to the final 3-2 on aggregate — where it beat Bayern Munich to clinch a historic treble under Jose Mourinho. Inter is hoping it won’t have to make a similarly arduous journey after an unprecedented blackout brought much of Spain and Portugal to a standstill Monday. Power had almost fully returned to Spain early Tuesday morning and Inter’s charter flight was still scheduled to take off for Barcelona at 5 p.m.
SYDNEY: Australia’s two-time Grand Slam doubles champion Max Purcell has accepted an 18-month doping ban, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) said on Tuesday. The 27-year-old in December took a voluntary suspension, describing himself at the time as “devastated” and saying he had not intended to break anti-doping rules. Purcell has admitted receiving intravenous vitamin infusions of more than 500ml on December 16 and 20, 2023.
MADRID: There was still no power at the Caja Magica tennis complex that is hosting the Madrid Open on Tuesday, putting in jeopardy the resumption of play a day after several matches had to be canceled. Tournament organizers said the opening of the gates for fans was delayed until 11 a.m. local time (0900 GMT) because of the outage.
The entire Jaipur crowd was left stunned after Rajasthan Royals' 14-year-old prodigy, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, shattered multiple records and propelled his team to victory in a must-win IPL 2025 match against Gujarat Titans on Monday. Chasing the target of 210, RR always dominated the game as the teen batter stood tall against GT's deadly bowling lineup and became the fastest Indian centurion in IPL history, reaching there in just 35 balls. As a result, the hosts went across the line in just 15.5 overs and remained alive in the playoffs race.
Their play-off hopes all but over, Chennai Super Kings would look to turn around a floundering campaign when they square off against a better-placed but erratic Punjab Kings in their Indian Premier League match at Chepauk on Wednesday. It has been a disappointing season for five-time champions CSK, languishing at the bottom of the table with just two wins out of nine games. PBKS, on the other hand, are placed fifth in the standings with five wins from nine matches and would look to rise up with a victory against a demoralised CSK side, which failed to get its combinations right so far in the season.
As excitement builds for the much-anticipated T20 Mumbai League 2025, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) announced a star-studded line-up of icon players, headlined by India stars Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane. The T20 Mumbai League, one of India's leading franchise-based domestic T20 tournaments, returns after a six-year break with the third edition scheduled to take place at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai from May 26 to June 8. Joining the roster of icon players are Sarfaraz Khan, Shardul Thakur, Prithvi Shaw, Shivam Dube and Tushar Deshpande. All eight players have represented India at the highest level, which highlights the exceptional depth of talent within Mumbai's cricketing pipeline.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Rajasthan Royals' 14-year-old prodigy, created history on Monday with a terrific 35-ball-century against Gujarat Titans in their IPL 2025 match. In the chase of 210 in Jaipur, the teenager helped RR clinch the victory in just 15.5 overs and eight wickets in hand. Suryavanshi is now the second fastest centurion in IPL after Chris Gayle's 30-ball knock for RCB and fastest ever for any Indian. As the Bihar-born prodigy shattered many records, wishes from all over the world started pouring in.
