Central Contract Opt-Outs Are Straining Player Availability For New Zealand, Says Tim Southee

The rising trend of Kiwi cricketers forgoing national contracts to potentially ply their trade in T20 leagues has adversely impacted player availability for New Zealand, skipper Tim Southee admitted on Sunday. The likes former captain Kane Williamson, Devon Conway and Finn Allen this year joined a long list of players who have opted for a casual contract instead of New Zealand Cricket's central contract in order to pursue opportunities within franchise cricket. "NZC is working with the players and they are trying to come up with a solution that's best suited for the players and New Zealand cricket as a whole," Southee said on the eve of New Zealand's one-off Test against Afghanistan.

The Indian cricket team returns to action after a long break as a two-match Test series against Bangladesh begins on September 19. The India stars last played in the white-ball series against Sri Lanka which was followed by long break of more than a month. Ahead of the series against Bangladesh, the BCCI has organised a camp for the Indian cricket team between September 13-18 in Chennai. According to a report by Times of India, Mumbai's young spinner Himanshu Singh has been called up for the camp. The 21-year-old reportedly has a bowling action quite similar to Ravichandran Ashwin and he has been included in the camp to help the batters prepare for Bangladesh spinners.

Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran is a doubtful for the one-off Test against New Zealand after copping up an injury in Greater Noida on Sunday. The 22-year-old opening batter hurt his ankle during team's final practice session ahead of Afghanistan's first ever Test against New Zealand, starting on Monday. "Today, in the practice session, Ibrahim had an injury in his ankle. But it's not sure 100 per cent what will happen tomorrow. We will see what will happen with him," Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi informed at the pre-match press conference.

Michael Vaughan has warned England against "take the mick out of the game" after a careless batting display against Sri Lanka in the third Test at the Oval. Randhir Singh Becomes First Indian To Be Elected As Olympic Council Of Asia President

Veteran sports administrator Randhir Singh on Sunday became the first Indian to be elected as the president of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) during the 44th General Assembly of the continental body in New Delhi. A five-time Olympic shooter, Randhir was the lone eligible candidate for the OCA president's post. His tenure will run from 2024 till 2028, and his election was unanimous. The 77-year-old Randhir has been the OCA acting president since 2021, filling in for Kuwait's Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, who was handed a 15-year ban from sports administration in May this year over ethics breaches.
