As the 10 teams prepare for the start of the 2024 T20 Women's World Cup, here's a look at six players who are at the forefront of their team's hopes of lifting the trophy on October 20.
India batter Sarfaraz Khan, who wasn't a part of the playing XI for any of the two Tests against Bangladesh, slammed a century in the Irani Cup for Mumbai, sending the team management a clear message. Sarfaraz, despite his heroics in domestic red-ball games, hasn't quite managed to cement his place in the Test playing XI. While Sarfaraz was a part of the India squad for the 2-match series against Bangladesh, he was released on both occasions -- first for the Duleep Trophy, then for the Irani Cup.
On the last day of the India vs Bangladesh 2nd Test in Kanpur on Tuesday, the visitors went from three down to seven down in the space of just three runs. Eight sessions were lost in the first three days due to persistent rain and it seemed that the game would just meander to a dull draw. However, after bowling out Bangladesh for 233, India destroyed the visitors' attack to take a 52-run lead, all in just 34.4 overs. The approach opened up the game. Then India kept Bangladesh under the pump, bowling them out for a mere 146 in the second essay and raced to the 95-run target in 17.2 overs.
Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah regained his spot as the number one Test batter, while young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal moved to third spot in the latest ICC Test Rankings issued on Wednesday. Bumrah overtakes teammate Ravichandran Ashwin and claims the premier position for just the second time on the back of his six scalps for the match during India's recent seven-wicket triumph over Bangladesh in Kanpur, which included three scalps per innings, as per ICC.
India captain Rohit Sharma once again proved his astute captaincy skills as the team bounced back from a weather-related setback in the Kanpur Test against Bangladesh to clinch a series-sealing win. As India took on Bangladesh in the 2nd Test at Green Park Stadium, more than two days' play was washed out due to rain and wet outfield in Kanpur, prompting the hosts to come up with an ultra-aggressive strategy when the game resumed on Day 4. On the 5th day, Rohit came up with an exquisite plan to dismiss Bangladesh's Mominul Haque, the team's top-scoring batter in the first innings. Rohit's masterplan even impressed Sunil Gavaskar, who was doing commentary during that phase of play.
SA20 has been raised to the next level for the upcoming Season 3 after a successful third auction in Cape Town on Tuesday. The League received over 580 applications for the remaining 13 slots that were on offer at the auction, along with six Rookie draft picks. Cricket SA T20 Cricketer of the Year, Reeza Hendricks, was the most sought-after pick, with the stylish right-hander heading to MI Cape Town for South African Rand 4.3 million. Hendricks, who had previously played for Joburg Super Kings, was the central focus of a bidding war between MI Cape Town and Pretoria Capitals, with the Newlands-based team eventually winning the race.
The likes of India, England and South Africa will strive to end Australia's unrivalled dominance in the Women's T20 World Cup, beginning with a double header in Sharjah on Thursday. Bangladesh will take on Scotland in the tournament opener in an afternoon fixture followed by a clash between Asian teams Pakistan and Sri Lanka later in the day at Sharjah. Political unrest in Bangladesh forced the International Cricket Council to shift the 10-team event to the UAE back in August.
After star batter Babar Azam announced that he will be stepping down as the white-ball captain of the Pakistan cricket team, wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan is likely to take his place, according to a report from Geo News. According to the report, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials will hold meetings with Rizwan for team selection. As per the report from Geo News, Babar Azam was not asked to resign from captaincy from the top brass as white-ball coach Gary Kirsten wanted the 29-year-old to lead the side.
