LONDON : Highlights of the first day at the Wimbledon tennis championships on Monday (times GMT):
LONDON : The Wimbledon women's singles final between Italy's seventh seed Jasmine Paolini and 31st seeded Czech Barbora Krejcikova takes place at the All England Club on Saturday. The men's and women's doubles finals are also taking place.
Donna Vekic said the lesson was to "never give up" after overcoming dark times to reach her first Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon on Tuesday. The Croatian won 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 to end the fairytale run of New Zealand qualifier Lulu Sun and will face Italian seventh seed Jasmine Paolini or US 19th seed Emma Navarro for a place in Saturday's final. Vekic, 28, had knee surgery at the start of 2021, and suffered further setbacks into the follow season, which she described as "very tough". Even this year, before the French Open, she was tempted to take a break from the tour. "I didn't have any energy, any motivation to keep practising, keep pushing because I felt like the last couple of months I've given everything for tennis, and I wasn't getting the results that I kind of expected," she said.
Jasmine Paolini reached her second consecutive Grand Slam final with a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) victory over unseeded Donna Vekic at Wimbledon on Thursday in a rollicking match that lasted 2 hours, 51 minutes, making it the tournament's longest women's semifinal on record.
SEATTLE — A'ja Wilson had 24 points and 20 rebounds for her first career 20-20 game and the Las Vegas Aces beat the Seattle Storm 84-79 on Wednesday.
LONDON : Russian sixth-seed Andrey Rublev crashed out of Wimbledon in the first round on Tuesday, losing 6-4 5-7 6-2 7-6(5) to world No.122 Francisco Comesana of Argentina, playing his first match at a Grand Slam.
Pep Guardiola's name was playfully booed as he took his seat at Wimbledon on Saturday.
Carlos Alcaraz cheekily copied England Euro 2024 star Jude Bellingham's trademark goal celebration on Friday as he soaked up the adulation on Wimbledon's Centre Court. The defending champion came through a tough five-setter against close friend Frances Tiafoe to reach the fourth round, where he will face America's Brandon Nakashima or 16th seed Ugo Humbert of France. After the match he spread his arms wide as he walked around Centre Court, in homage to the England midfielder, who plays for his beloved Real Madrid.
