Delhi Joins Chennai And Singapore In Race To Host Chess World Championship

Delhi has joined Chennai and Singapore in the race to host the World Championship match between D. Gukesh and China's Ding Liren after the All India Chess Federation backed the national capital's bid while accusing the Tamil Nadu government of acting unilaterally by pushing the southern city's name. The International Chess Federation (FIDE) CEO Emil Sutovsky on Saturday said all three cities have submitted their bids and they "meet the criteria". Sutovsky added Chennai was the first to bid for the much-anticipated match in November-December this year, while the New Delhi bid came in last.

Having amassed 8.5 points from the first four rounds, Vaishali is ahead of women's world champion Wenjun Ju of China and Anna Muzychuk of Ukraine in the USD 1,61,000 prize money tournament. With each win under Classical time control worth three points here, Vaishali has largely benefitted from victories over compatriot Koneru Humpy and veteran Pia Cramling.

The 18-year-old Indian, who has beaten Carlsen in the rapid/exhibition games quite a few times, took the leader's position with 5.5 points after three rounds. Praggnanandhaa was playing with white pieces and his victory pushed home favourite Carlsen to the fifth spot in the points table. Classical chess, also known as slow chess, allows players significant amount of time to make their moves, usually at least one hour.

Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa lost to World Champion Ding Liren in the Armageddon tie-breaker after the two played out a draw under normal time control in the second round of the Norway Chess tournament in Stavanger. The second round of the prestigious event saw all three classical games ending up in a draw once again. Magnus Carlsen, Alireza Firouzja and Liren won with white in the subsequent Armageddon games to grab 1.5 points each.

Norway Chess: Praggnanandhaa Beats Alireza In Armageddon

Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa got off to a flier and defeated Firouzja Alireza of France in the Armageddon game in the first round of Norway Chess tournament here on Tuesday. After an easy draw under normal time control, Praggnanadhaa got 10 minutes as white compared to Alireza's seven but with the condition that he had to win as a draw would have given black extra points. The Indian was clinical in his approach and carved out a fine victory in the endgame.
