As chess continues to earn India fame all across the world, certain athletes aren't happy with the lack of recognition they get from the state governments. One such athlete is Tania Sachdev who decided to voice her frustration over repeated cold shoulder from the Delhi government. Tania, in a scathing post on X (formerly Twitter), claimed that she hasn't received any recognition from the Delhi government despite playing chess for India since 2008. She also reminded the political leaders of her achievements in the 2022 Chess Olympiad. She also won a Chess Olympics gold medal in 2024.

Major Dhyan Chand Scholarship Award worth Rs 28.80 lakh will be offered to 48 zonal winners of the SOG Grandmasters Series, the organisers of the mind sports events announced after the South Zone finals on Thursday. The competition, organised by Skillhub Online Games Federation, was held in three categories -- eChess, Blind Chess and Rummy and a total of 132 players competed for the top spots.

The "multi-millionaire" tag does "mean a lot" to new world champion D Gukesh but he doesn't play the game for material gains but for that unbridled joy, which he has been able to retain since the time a chess board used to be the "coolest toy" for him. Gukesh, the 18-year-old from Chennai, is now richer by Rs 11.45 crore which he will receive from FIDE as prize money for beating Ding Liren of China in the final. Gukesh's father Rajnikanth gave up his career as an ENT surgeon to accompany his son on the circuit while mother Padmakumari, who is a microbiologist, became the sole earner of the family.

Indian chess has been on the upward trajectory for the past two years or so, but no one can deny that 2024 has been a year where the sport took a quantum leap. The year kicked-off with Candidates tournament in Toronto, Canada where five Indians made the cut in the open field despite the tricky qualification demands of the competition. Only eight qualify for the Candidates. While D Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa and Vidit Gujrathi made the cut in the eight-man line-up, Koneru Humpy and Vaishali Rameshbabu were part of the eight-women category.
