Chess Olympiad, to be held here later this year, began on Monday with the legendary Viswanathan Anand terming the tournament a life-time opportunity for youngsters to catch a glimpse of their idols. "It is a lifetime opportunity for youngsters to get a glimpse of their idols, watch them play and possibly interact with them," said India's first-ever Grandmaster Anand in a press release. The Olympiad will be held from July 28 to August 10. "The Countdown to the #ChessOlympiad2022 begins! #100daystogo and to mark the occasion find me on livestream looking at some games of the past Chess Olympiads," Anand said in a tweet.
Indian GM Gukesh wins title at La Roda International tourney
Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh emerged victorious in the 48th La Roda International Open Chess tournament here, scoring eight points from nine rounds. The 15-year old GM from Chennai, who remained unbeaten through the nine rounds, defeated Israel's Victor Mikhalevski in the final round late on Sunday to emerge clear winner ahead of Haik M Martirosyan of Armenia, who secured 7.5 points. Gukesh's compatriot - R Praggnanandhaa, another teenaged GM, took the third spot.

Young Indian Grandmaster R Pragganandhaa on Tuesday won the prestigious Reykjavik Open chess tournament here with 7.5 points from nine rounds. The 16-year-old Pragganandhaa defeated compatriot GM D Gukesh in the final round to emerge sole winner. Praggnanandhaa turned things around in the all-Indian battle after his opponent blundered when he appeared to be losing. The highly-rated Indian remained unbeaten through the nine rounds and finished with wins over Matthieu Cornette (France) and Gukesh in the last two rounds.
