The top-seeded Anand, who Thursday became the country's 76th Grandmaster, scored nine points from 11 rounds to emerge clear winner. He was half a point ahead of the rest of the field. Anand's compatriot M Pranesh, who was the second seed, finished joint third with eight points along with three others.
The 15-year-old, having already met the other requirements that are necessary for a GM title, achieved the honour late on Thursday. To become a GM, a player has to secure three GM norms and cross the live rating of 2,500 Elo points. Anand had scored the third and final GM norm at the 55th Biel Chess Festival in Switzerland in July. "He is passionate towards chess. Extremely interested and passionate towards the game. He can work for any number of hours," Anand's coach V Saravanan told PTI.

Magnus Carlsen caused a major drama late on Monday night as he withdrew from the Sinquefield Cup, a classical format tournament being held at St Louis, Missouri. The Norwegian announced his decision --- ahead of his fourth round encounter against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov --- via a cryptic tweet which had a short clip of Jose Mourinho wherein the latter says “If I speak, I am in big trouble” during one of his previous press conference about refereeing. The 31-year-old wrote, “I’ve withdrawn from the tournament. I’ve always enjoyed playing in the @STLChessClub, and hope to be back in the future.”
