The Punjab government on Tuesday announced a cash reward of Rs 40 lakh for weightlifter Harjinder Kaur after she claimed a bronze medal in the 71kg category at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. A resident of Nabha in Patiala district, Harjinder totalled 212kgs (93 in snatch and 119 in clean and jerk) to finish on the podium on Monday night.
Olympic medalist PV Sindhu took a trip down the memory lane and shared a picture of her bronze medal, to mark the first anniversary of the Tokyo Olympics triumph. After facing a defeat in the semi-final clash against Tai Tzu-Ying of Chinese Taipei, Sindhu thrashed China's He Bingjiao 21-13, 21-15 in the bronze medal match at the Games last year. "A year since I stood on the Olympic podium representing a billion dreams. Still feels surreal. Nothing tops the feeling. #tokyoolympics #1yeartotokyo2020," wrote Sindhu on her Instagram account.

Indian weightlifter Harjinder Kaur won a bronze medal with a combined lift of 212kg in the Women's 71kg final at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham on Monday. Nigerian lifter Joy Ogbonne Eze was unsuccessful in all of her three attempts in the clean and jerk round, meaning Harjinder Kaur became India's ninth medallist at the Commonwealth Games 2022. England's Sarah Davies won a gold medal.

India won a second medal in judo in the form of a bronze when Varanasi's Vijay Kumar Yadav (men's 60kg) defeated Petros Christodoulides of Cyprus by 'Ippon' in just 58 seconds at the Commonwealth Games. In a tight contest, Shushila, who had four stitches on her right toes, fought hard before losing the final via 'Waza-Ari' in 4.25 minutes. It was the Indian's second silver medal at the showpiece. She had finished runners-up at the 2014 Glasgow Games as well.
With this win, Yadav gave India its eighth medal in the Birmingham 2022.
