Kiran Baliyan became the first Indian woman to win an Asian Games medal in shot put event in 72 years as she picked up a bronze on the opening day of competitions in Hangzhou on Friday. The 24-year-old Baliyan hurled the iron ball to a distance of 17.36m in her third attempt for her best effort of the day to open India's medal account. Baliyan, thus, became only the second Indian to win a medal in women's shot put in Asian Games after Barbara Webster, an Anglo-Indian from then Bombay, won a bronze in the inaugural edition in New Delhi in 1951.

Singapore's Jun Han Ryan Lo claimed the gold with a net score of 26. Lack of wind, however, denied India a medal in women's single dinghy ILCA-6 event where Nethra Kumanan had to settle for a disappointing fourth place finish after race No 12, which was to be the final one in the category, was cancelled.

India's Sift Kaur Samra bagged a gold while Ashi Chouksey got a bronze medal in the women's 50 m rifle 3P individual final at the ongoing Asian Games in Hangzhou on Wednesday, giving the country a double podium finish. With the score of 469.6 points, Sift not only topped the charts to secure a gold, but also broke the world record, Asian record and the Asian Games record. The world record was held by Great Britain, the Asian record was held by China and the Asian Games record was previously held by Mongolia.
