Cheteshwar Pujara would strive to stay relevant in the national team's scheme of things with a purposeful knock when Saurashtra clashes with Rest of India, a side that is packed with five specialist openers, in the Irani Cup clash starting here Saturday. While Madhya Pradesh are the 2021-22 Ranji Trophy champions, Saurashtra will be playing the Irani Trophy by virtue of being the 2019-20 champions as the one-off match wasn't held for successive seasons due to COVID-19.
Since Thursday, there have been reports of Bumrah likely to miss out on playing the T20 World Cup due to a back injury. On Friday, he was replaced by fellow pacer Mohammed Siraj for the remainder of the T20I series against South Africa, which further raised doubts over Bumrah's availability for the mega event. Shami, included as a travelling reserve for the T20 World Cup, hadn't featured in T20Is against Australia and currently against South Africa due to a positive Covid-19 test, which has since then returned a negative result on re-testing after a period of 10 days.
After all, Bumrah is not the Indian pace spearhead for nothing. He is dangerous with the new ball and lethal with the old one. An expert in bowling yorkers at will. But his injury has forced the Indian team management to look at other pace options available for the marquee event and the biggest question right now is who will lead the Indian pace attack in the absence of Bumrah? Mohammad Shami and Deepak Chahar are the two bowlers who were named as standbys when the BCCI announced the India squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia. TimesofIndia.com here looks at the pacers named in the India squad for the World Cup and their strengths and weaknesses: Bhuvneshwar Kumar: Things change quickly in international cricket. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the best bet to partner Bumrah with the new ball but things are different now.
The Indian women haven't had a lot of success of late in the T20 format but at the continental level, Harmanpreet Kaur's team will start as clear favourites. Barring their only blemish in the last edition of the tournament, India have won all the Asia Cup titles since the event's inception in 2004 (4 titles in ODI format and 2 in T20 version). The Asia Cup was transformed from ODI to T20 format in 2012 and India have won twice, while losing to hosts Bangladesh in the last edition in 2018.
NEW DELHI : Jasprit Bumrah is set to miss next month's Twenty20 World Cup in Australia, local media reported on Friday, after the Indian bowler was ruled out of the ongoing home series against South Africa with a back injury.
World Cup in Australia next month, but stress fractures cannot derail the star bowler's sparkling career, assures Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala, who is on the ICC medical advisory committee. "Stress fractures of the back are not career-threatening or career-ending. In most instances, once you rest and rehabilitate, you can return to complete normalcy. Although stress reactions heal quickly, stress fractures take a longer time and the recovery is frustratingly slow, because there's not too much that you can do except for unloading the area and subsequently gradually reintroducing loads once healing is complete. Stress fractures are unlike traumatic fractures and rest is a critical aspect of the treatment in these injuries. Once you do that, it recovers," Pardiwala explained to TOI.
Who will play lead role in T20 World Cup if Bumrah is absent?THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If you had watched the first 20 minutes of the India-SA T20 match here at the Greenfield stadium on Wednesday, you would have felt that a Test match was on in coloured clothing under lights. Arshdeep Singh (3/32) and Deepak Chahar (2/24) swung the ball like swing masters in English conditions. And with Harshal Patel (2/26) complementing the efforts of the new-ball duo, the Indian pace attack looked a potent force as it set up an easy Indian win.
