Ramkumar Ramanathan Gets Wild Card For Bengaluru Open

Ramkumar Ramanathan, India's second-highest-ranked player, was on Saturday granted a wild card entry into the singles main draw of the Bengaluru Open, starting February 12. Ramkumar, who led India in the recent Davis Cup clash against Pakistan, had lost in the first round of the ongoing Chennai ATP Challenger and the opportunity will give him a chance to do well on home soil. Ramkumar has reached the singles final on the ATP Challenger circuit seven times, winning his lone title in Manama, Bahrain, in November 2021.

Fresh from their Davis Cup win over Pakistan, four Indians including Ramkumar Ramanathan and N Sriram Balaji will be in action in the Bengaluru Open slated to be held from February 12-18. India's top singles player Sumit Nagal, who opted out of the Davis Cup, will also be seen in action, having earned a direct entry by virtue of his 137th rank. The cut-off for the Bengaluru Open was 257. At the Australian Open last month, Nagal had knocked out world number 27 Alexander Bublik in the first round of the main draw.

Defending Champions Odisha FC And Runners-Up Bengaluru FC Clubbed In Same Group For Super Cup

Reigning champions Odisha FC were on Monday clubbed with last edition runners-up Bengaluru FC in the same group for the Super Cup football tournament to be held in Bhubaneswar from January 9 to 28. Another Indian Super League side FC Goa and an I-League club (which will be known after qualifying play-off) will make up the four-team Group D, according to the group stage draw held in New Delhi. Odisha FC, which recently qualified for the AFC Cup inter-zone play-off semifinals, had beaten Bengaluru FC in the 2023 Super Cup final in Kozhikode, Kerala.

In the Men's Doubles Category, Saketh Myneni and Niki Poonacha of Hyderabad Strikers came out on top in the clash against Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Dennis Novak of Delhi Binny's Brigade, as the match ended 9-11. Delhi Binny's Brigade won the fixture against Hyderabad Strikers as it ended, 39-41 in their favour. Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan of Delhi Binny's Brigade was awarded Player of the Match.

ISL: Bengaluru Go Down 0-4 Against Mumbai City FC

Bengaluru FC fell to a heavy defeat at the hands of Mumbai City FC, losing 0-4 against the visitors in an ISL match in Bengaluru on Friday. Goals from Nasser El Khayati, Greg Stewart, Jorge Pereyra Diaz and Lallianzuala Chhangte gave Mumbai a commanding win. The result meant the Blues' winless streak extended to six games, with the side now placed at the ninth spot with seven points from nine games. The game commenced to a cagey start, but it was the visitors who took the lead with just over 10 minutes on the clock.

WPL 2024 May Follow Multi-City Format; Mumbai, Bengaluru Front-Runners

The second edition of the Women's Premier League (WPL) is likely to follow a multi-city format similar to the IPL and the matches may be played across Mumbai and Bengaluru. All the matches of the inaugural WPL was played between March 4 and 26 earlier this year at the DY Patil Stadium and the Brabourne Stadium. “The final decision (about venues) might come on December 9 (the day of the WPL auction) but it is highly likely that this year it (WPL) will follow the multi-city format with Mumbai and Bengaluru being the front-runners at this moment,” a BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity. “The WPL was received well by the fans in the opening year, and it is the right time to take it to different cities. Bengaluru always has a good audience for women's cricket, and it has now grown because of the RCB women's team.” Mumbai and Karnataka cricket association officials too expressed readiness to host the matches, if indeed they come their way.
