Bangladesh suffered a blow ahead of next month's Test series against Sri Lanka with off-spinner Mehidy Hasan ruled out of at least the first match with a finger injury. Mehidy has been a regular starter for Bangladesh in Tests and is the country's third-highest wicket-taker in the format as well as a useful lower-order batter. Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman has intimated he may not return to Test cricket as he needs to pick and choose between three formats to prolong his international career. Mustafizur last played a Test match for his national team in February 2021 in a home series against South Africa. He then opted out of red-ball cricket after the BCB decided to introduce format-wise contracts. Subsequently, he has missed the one-off Test against Zimbabwe and two-match series against Pakistan, New Zealand and South Africa and is unlikely to play the longest format again.
Former Bangladesh spinner Musharraf Hossain Rubel has died at the age of 40. "The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) mourns the passing of former Bangladesh National Team player Musharraf Hossain Rubel. The left-arm spinner amassed over 550 wickets across all formats in a career spanning two decades. The BCB extends profound sympathies and condolences," tweeted Bangladesh Cricket. As per ESPNCricinfo, Hossain was suffering from brain cancer, diagnosed in March 2019. After his recovery, the tumor relapsed again in November 2020. Also known as 'Rubel', the spinner had been in hospital over the last couple of weeks but went home after another chemotherapy bout recently.
