Why Mushfiqur Rahim Was Out 'Obstructing The Field', Not 'Handling The Ball' Against New Zealand

Former captain Mushfiqur Rahim on Wednesday became the first Bangladesh batter to be given out for 'obstructing the field' in a bizarre dismissal on the opening day of the second Test against New Zealand here. The 36-year-old Rahim defended a rising delivery from New Zealand quick Kyle Jamieson in the fourth ball of the 41st over and then extended his right hand to apparently keep the ball away after it bounced up wide outside off stump. The Black Caps were quick to appeal and the on-field umpires referred the matter to the TV umpire Ahsan Raza who gave Rahim out.

Bangladesh cricketer Mushfiqur Rahim became the victim of a rare dismissal during the first day of the second Test against New Zealand on Wednesday. The wicket-keeper batter, used to using his hands while standing around the stumps, was dismissed for handling the ball during an over from New Zealand's Kyle Jamieson. In the process, Rahim became the first player ever from Bangladesh to have been dismissed in the fashion. He joined the rare list of cricketers, including the likes of Mohinder Amarnath, Mohsin Khan, Michael Vaughan, etc. to have been dismissed in the manner.

Pakistan Babar Azam has reached Australia, donning the Test jersey, with the aim being putting the ghosts of Cricket World Cup 2023 behind him. Following his dismal show in the white-ball tournament, Babar decided to relinquish captaincy responsibilities on all three formats of the game. South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma and pace ace Kagiso Rabada have been rested for the white-ball leg of this month's home series against India with the duo set to return for the two Tests. The Proteas host India for a full series, which includes three T20Is, as many ODIs and two Tests, beginning with the shortest format on December 10 in Durban. "Captain Temba Bavuma and Kagiso Rabada are amongst a group of players that have been omitted for the white-ball leg of the tour in order to play red-ball cricket as emphasis is placed on the Test series for which both will return," Cricket South Africa said on Monday.
