COVID-19 Was "A Disaster" For Badminton, Says BWF Chief

Badminton is finally emerging from a pandemic that was "threatening the sport", world federation chief Thomas Lund told AFP, but China's zero-Covid policy means it may face further damaging disruption. Badminton World Federation secretary general Lund said the coronavirus pandemic made 2020 and 2021 "a disaster" for the game, forcing tournament cancellations worldwide and slashing finances to the bone. The situation is gradually returning to normal and in June the BWF announced an expanded calendar for the next four years that adds four more tournaments to the world tour.

Olympics dream but now the Spanish badminton star is aiming for a record fourth world title and gold at the 2024 Paris Games. Marin was the hot favourite for the Tokyo title last year until a knee injury in May forced her to miss not just the Olympics but also the world championships in her home town of Huelva five months later.

BWF World Championships: Dhruv Kapila-MR Arjun Cruise Into Quarterfinals

The Indian men's doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun moved to the quarterfinals with a come-from-behind victory over Terry Hee and Loh Kean Hean at the World Championships here on Thursday. The unseeded Indian duo had to toil hard for 58 minutes to win its round of 16 clash against the Singaporeans 18-21 21-15 21-16. Arjun and Kapila will cross swords with the third seed Indonesian pair of Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan in the the last eight stage.

BWF World Championships: Saina Nehwal Advances Into Pre-Quarterfinals

London Olympic bronze medallist shuttler Saina Nehwal kicked-off her BWF World Championships campaign with a straight game win over Hong Kong's Cheung Ngan Yi here on Tuesday. Saina, took 38 minutes to dispatch Ngan Yi 21-19 21-9 in the opening round. The 32-year-old, who has a silver and bronze from the Worlds, thus moved into the pre-quarterfinals as her second-round opponent, Nozomi Okuhara pulled out of the tournament due to an injury, giving the Indian a bye.

Last edition's runner-up Kidambi Srikanth on Wednesday crashed out of the World Championships after a straight game defeat to world number 32 Zhao Jun Peng. Kidambi went down against his Chinese counterpart 18-21, 17-21 in a match lasting only 34 minutes. Reigning Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen, meanwhile, sailed into the men's singles pre-quarterfinals with a straight games win over Spain's Luis Penalver.

HS Prannoy stunned second seed Kento Momota in straight games to record a sensational win while reigning Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen also sailed into the men's singles pre-quarterfinals of the World Championships in Tokyo on Wednesday. Unseeded Prannoy rose above expectations to shut the door on crowd favourite and two-time former world champion Momota 21-17, 21-16 in a second round tie. Incidentally, it was Prannoy's first win over Momota in eight matches. In their previous clashes, the Indian won only one game against his higher-rated Japanese rival.

Lakshya Sen Enters Pre-Quarterfinals Of BWF World Championships

Young Indian badminton ace Lakshya Sen sailed into the men's singles pre-quarterfinals with a straight game win over Spain's Luis Penalver in the BWF World Championships here on Wednesday. Commonwealth Games champion Sen won his second round match 21-17 21-10, taking 72 minutes to complete the formality. After trailing 3-4, the ninth seeded Sen grabbed a six-point lead to be 13-7. The Indian continued to stay ahead before comfortably wrapping up the first game.

BWF World Championships 2022: MR Arjun-Dhruv Kapila Reach Last 16

The Indian duo of MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila advanced to the last 16 stages of the ongoing BWF World Championships 2022 after defeating Denmark's Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen in the second round of men's doubles category on Wednesday. Playing on court 2, the India duo emerged victorious by 21-17, 21-16. Arjun and Kapila dominated the match and sealed it in two straight games. The Danish opposition fought well but was not good enough to end on the winning side.
