The Indian challenge at the Thailand Open ended after star shuttler Lakshya Sen lost a tough three-game men's singles semifinal against Thailand's second seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn here on Saturday The 21-year-old from Almora looked in control in the first game against his seeded opponent but lost his way as the match progressed to eventually go down 21-13 17-21 13-21 in a contest that lasted one hour and 15 minutes. Kunlavut will next play the winner of the other semifinal between Hong Kong's eighth seed Cheuk Yiu Lee and Toma Junior Popov of France. Lakshya had entered the semifinal for the first time this season, having come close in Indonesia Masters, where he exited in the quarterfinals.

Kiran, the world number 59, took 39 minutes to beat his higher ranked Chinese opponent 21-11, 21-19 in the men's singles round of 16 clash. It is the first time that Kiran has reached the quarterfinal at a BWF World Tour Super 500 event. The 2022 Odisha Open winner will face the winner of the match between Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong and Toma Junior Popov of France in last eight clash on Friday.

Badminton's governing body paved the way Wednesday for Russian and Belarusian players to return to competition as neutrals after they were banned over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. It comes with the Paris Olympics just over a year away and sports federations grappling with what to do about athletes from Russia and its ally Belarus. Badminton World Federation (BWF) barred Russian and Belarusian players in March last year and in April extended the ban as Moscow's assault on Ukraine stretched into a second year.
