The Australia no. 5 played with great ease and scored at a consistent rate to reach his sixth Test ton in just 106 balls. In doing so, Head became the first cricketer to score a ton in a World test Championship final.

The Rahul Dravid-coached team went in with a four-pronged pace attack and preferred Ravindra Jadeja over seasoned off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin as the lone spinner. Mohammed Siraj dismissed Usman Khawaja to give India a really good start before David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne stitched 69 runs for the second wicket for Australia. Shardul Thakur got better of Warner and then Mohammed Shami produced a ripper to get rid of Labuschagne.
India's star batter Virat Kohli praised Australian batter Steve Smith, naming him the "best Test player" of this generation. Before the start of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia, Virat Kohli featured in a video where he lauded Smith. "Steve Smith, according to me, is the best Test player of this generation. He has displayed that his adaptability is absolutely brilliant. You take any cricketer of this generation... in 85-90 Tests, he has an average of 60 which is quite unbelievable. The consistency and impact with which he scores runs, I haven't seen anyone else doing that in last 10 years. Definitely, Steve Smith, along with Marnus Labuschagne, are their main players in the batting order because they control their batting lineup," Virat told Star Sports.

It will be 50th Test match for both the players. In 49 test matches, Rohit has smashed 3,379 runs at an average of 45.66. He has scored nine centuries and 14 fifties. Of these, he scored 2002 runs at home with an average of 66.73. He has scored eight hundreds and six fifties in India.
