Sports Ministry provides financial assistance to athletes, including Manika Batra, for future competitions

Sports Ministry's on Thursday granted financial assistance to several athletes across the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) core and development groups, including Tokyo Paralympics silver medallist Nishad Kumar and ace woman table tennis player Manika Batra, to support them in their preparations for upcoming competitions. Nishad, who created an Asian record of 2.06m in the T-47 men's high jump, has been given a financial assistance of Rs 18.9 lakh towards training at the Olympic Training Centre in Chula Vista, United States. He has already left for the 73-day training camp, which started on Thursday and will continue till August 12, along with his physiotherapist Aalaap Jawadekar.

Indian para-athlete Vinod Kumar has been banned for two years for intentionally misrepresenting his abilities in classification at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, World Para Athletics said. The Board of Appeal of Classification (BAC), an independent body, said the 41-year-old will be ineligible to compete in para athletics competition until August 2023. "The athlete was observed performing several movements and functions in competition which were not consistent with his performance during the physical and technical aspects of classification," World Para Athletics said in a statement, without giving further details.
