In a bid to ensure that athletes steer clear of contaminated supplements, which are also often cited as reason for failed dope tests by offenders caught in the anti-doping net, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on Friday inaugurated a Centre of Excellence in Gandhinagar that would evaluate such add-ons. The minister virtually inaugurated the Centre of Excellence for Nutritional Supplements Testing for Sportspersons (CoE-NSTS) at the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

South African Olympic Champion Caster Semenya Asks For Funds For Legal Fight

Double Olympic champion Caster Semenya on Friday appealed for funds for her legal battle against regulations requiring female athletes with high testosterone to take medication as she prepares for a May hearing at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). The 33-year-old South African athlete won a long legal battle last July against Switzerland at the ECHR, which ruled she was the victim of discrimination from the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport. But Swiss authorities, supported by World Athletics, have taken the matter to the ECHR's Grand Chamber, whose rulings are binding, with hearings slated to start on May 15. "We lack funds. We have a lot of experts that come in that we need to pay," Caster told a press conference in Johannesburg.

India's top shot putter Karanveer Singh and discus thrower Kirpal Singh were among several athletes across sports who were handed bans for four years by the National Anti-Doping Agency's (NADA) Disciplinary panel. Karanveer and Kirpal were handed four year bans by the Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel (ADDP) of the NADA in its order on December 29, 2023. The NADA issued the list of the athletes who were handed bans by the panel only on Thursday. Kirpal's ban period began on July 7, 2023, while Karanveer will serve his ban from July 26, 2023. Both were among around 20 athletes from across sports whose provisional suspensions were revealed by the NADA in July last year.
