The Men's Selection Committee named Akash Deep as replacement for Shivam Mavi in the Indian squad for the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022. Mavi is suffering from a back injury and is ruled out of the tournament. The men's cricket competition will take place from 28th September to 8th October in a T20 format.
Olympic bronze medal-winning Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal is set to win uncontested from the South Asia Zone in the first-ever Athletes Committee poll of the upcoming Asian Games. For the first time in history, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) is conducting a poll among athletes to elect 10 members of the Athletes' Committee. The London 2012 Olympics bronze medalist's name was on Saturday chosen as the sole nominee from among 26 nominations to compete for 10 positions. "The athletes will be voting for 10 members of the Athletes' Committee -- one female and one male from each of the five OCA zones: West Asia, Central Asia, South Asia, South East Asia and East Asia," the OCA stated.
Indian badminton player Anupama Upadhyaya who is part of the Badminton team contingent for the Hangzhou Asian Games, said on Saturday that she admires India's star player Lakshya Sen as he encouraged her to play international level. Speaking exclusively to ANI, Anupama mentioned Lakshya as someone she looked up to during her training days under his father DK Sen's guidance. Lakshya also inspired her to play internationally. “At the age of 11, I started training under sir DK Sen; he is Lakshya Sen's father. I used to look up to Lakshya, and how he is playing at the national, and international level, winning trophies. I used to look at him and I also wanted to win titles. At the age of 11, I decided to play internationally and win lots of medals for the country," she said.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Friday said that senior defender Sandesh Jhingan will be joining the Indian squad for the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, arriving at a consensus amid the club versus country conundrum. Two sports disciplines including esports, which is becoming a rage among youngsters across the globe, will make their debut at the Asian Games as Hangzhou prepares to host the quadrennial extravaganza later this month. Originally scheduled to take place last year, the continental showpiece will commence on September 23 with esports along with breakdancing making an entry into the curriculum as the Games expand to 40 sports (61 disciplines) spread over venues across six districts.
