Hangzhou Asian Games Village Inaugurated

The Hangzhou Asian Games Village was inaugurated in China on Saturday with acting director general of the Olympic Council of Asia, Vinod Kumar Tiwari, describing it as "beautiful and outstanding" during the opening ceremony. In front of government leaders and officials of the Hangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee, Tiwari said he had been visiting Hangzhou for eight years and had always been impressed with the plans and preparations for the 19th edition of the mega event.

The Men's Selection Committee named Akash Deep as replacement for Shivam Mavi in the Indian squad for the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022. Olympic bronze medal-winning Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal is set to win uncontested from the South Asia Zone in the first-ever Athletes Committee poll of the upcoming Asian Games. For the first time in history, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) is conducting a poll among athletes to elect 10 members of the Athletes' Committee. The London 2012 Olympics bronze medalist's name was on Saturday chosen as the sole nominee from among 26 nominations to compete for 10 positions. "The athletes will be voting for 10 members of the Athletes' Committee -- one female and one male from each of the five OCA zones: West Asia, Central Asia, South Asia, South East Asia and East Asia," the OCA stated.

Indian badminton player Anupama Upadhyaya who is part of the Badminton team contingent for the Hangzhou Asian Games, said on Saturday that she admires India's star player Lakshya Sen as he encouraged her to play international level. Speaking exclusively to ANI, Anupama mentioned Lakshya as someone she looked up to during her training days under his father DK Sen's guidance. Lakshya also inspired her to play internationally. “At the age of 11, I started training under sir DK Sen; he is Lakshya Sen's father. I used to look up to Lakshya, and how he is playing at the national, and international level, winning trophies. I used to look at him and I also wanted to win titles. At the age of 11, I decided to play internationally and win lots of medals for the country," she said.

Sandesh Jhingan, two other players added to Chhetri-led Indian team for Asian Games

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Friday said that senior defender Sandesh Jhingan will be joining the Indian squad for the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, arriving at a consensus amid the club versus country conundrum. Veteran striker Sunil Chhetri will be spearheading the Indian challenge and besides his longtime teammate Jhingan, he will also be able to avail the services of Chinglensana Singh and Lalchungnunga as AIFF added the duo in the squad. India head coach Igor Stimac, who has been urging the Indian Super League (ISL) clubs to release their players for national duty, said, "It's a wonderful development that some experienced players have been added to the Asian Games squad, who will certainly help the cause of the team.

The sports ministry on Thursday shared a revised list of Indian contingent for the upcoming Asian Games, adding 22 new sportspersons and naming 25 replacements, which include athletes, coaches, and support staff.
