Pooja Jatyan on Sunday scripted history as she became the first Indian to win a silver in an individual section of the Para World Championships. Pooja lost to Italian Petrilli Vincenza in the summit clash to end her World Para Championships dream run with a silver medal. Eyeing to become the first woman archery world champion at the senior level, the 24-year-old from Gurugram was up against Tokyo Paralympics silver medalist from Italy in the final. Pooja, who is afflicted with polio since childhood, put up a valiant show racing to a 3-1 lead but the world No. 7 Italian used her vast experience to bounce back and down the Indian 3-7 (24-24, 23-21, 26-28, 24-26, 25-27).
Pooja on Sunday created history by becoming the first to enter the final in an individual section of the Para World Championships. The 24-year-old came back from 0-2 down to defeat Hazel Chaisty of Britain 6-2 to assure India at least a second silver medal from the ongoing tournament.
Shyam Sundar Swami and Jyoti Baliyan bagged India's their first medal in the World Archery Para Championships after settling for a silver here on Friday. Leading by two points (78-76) at the halfway mark, the Indian duo choked under pressure in the back end to go down against Bair Shigaev and Tatiana Andrievskaia of Russia 148-150. Eyeing to become the first world champion in para archery from the country, the Indian duo started off with two 10s and two 9s to edge out the Russians by one point in the first set. A perfect second set, which included two arrows in the X (closest to the centre), ensured a two-point lead for the Indians at the halfway stage.
World Archery Para Championships here on Wednesday as the duo of Shyam Sundar Swami and Jyoti Baliyan assured the country of at least a silver medal by reaching the final of compound mixed team open event. The Indian pair will face the Russian team in the summit clash on Friday. Indian para archers have won medals in almost every single event since 2017, except in the World Championships.
