The first College Football Playoff rankings came out last week and already two teams in the initial top four have lost.
The first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2024 season will be announced Tuesday. While we have a month until the final rankings, several teams needed wins to remain in their respective conference races or hold onto their hopes for an at-large bid to the CFP.
On paper, Week 9 didn't promise much drama. It featured only one matchup of top 15 teams — the No. 8 LSU Tigers facing the No. 14 Texas A&M Aggies. But chaos has reigned through the first eight weeks of the season.
In Week 8, college football officially got cranky. Georgia emerged from its 30-15 statement win over Texas raging at officials and leaning as hard as ever into «No one believes in us» nonsense. Alabama and Tennessee could only fight the officials to a draw during a penalty festival in Knoxville, one that put Bama's playoff hopes in at least a little bit of danger. Oklahoma suffered its worst home loss since 2014. Michigan lost to Illinois for the first time since 2009. East Carolina became the first school of the season to fire its head coach.
In consecutive weeks, the No. 1 Texas Longhorns were featured in one of the week's biggest matchups. Last week, they demolished their Red River rivals, the Oklahoma Sooners. In Week 8, the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs came to Austin.
Week 7 featured some high-profile matchups even if the week lacked some of the upsets and drama from last week. The No. 1 Texas Longhorns faced their Red River rivals in the Oklahoma Sooners. The No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes faced their toughest opponent yet in the No. 3 Oregon Ducks.
Coach Steve Sarkisian expects quarterback Quinn Ewers to be ready to start when No. 1 Texas plays No. 18 Oklahoma in the Allstate Red River Rivalry on Saturday in Dallas, but the Longhorns will continue to monitor his recovery through the week.
Well, that was unexpected.
