England’s Ben White avoids surgery, but World Cup status in doubt

LONDON: England defender Ben White ‌will not require surgery for a knee injury suffered on Sunday, but his season for Arsenal is over and his status for next month’s World Cup is in significant doubt. Arsenal confirmed Tuesday that White had suffered a “significant medial knee ligament injury” during the team’s 1-0 win over ‌West Ham. ‌The team has three matches ‌remaining as Arsenal attempts to win the Premier League and Champions League. White, 28, was a somewhat surprising call up by England in March given that he had not featured for the national team since 2022 amid reports ‌of a ‌falling out with the former coaching staff.

Morocco to play a trio of World Cup warm-up games

RABAT: Morocco have confirmed ‌they will play three warm-up matches before next month’s World Cup, giving their new coach more game time with his squad. Morocco, who were surprise semifinalists at the World Cup in Qatar four years ago, appointed Mohamed Ouahbi as coach in March after the resignation of Walid Regragui. Ouahbi has ‌had only ‌two matches in charge ‌since taking over, a draw with Ecuador and a victory over Paraguay just weeks into the job. Morocco’s football federation said the team would play Burundi on May 26 behind closed doors at their training center in Sale before a ‌game against ‌Madagascar on June 2 in Rabat, where supporters ‌will be able to send ‌the team off. Once they arrive in the United States, where their base camp will be in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, the ‌Moroccans will conclude their preparations with a clash against Norway on June 7 in New York. Morocco are expected to begin preparations on May 22 but only plan to name their squad a week later, reports said. Drawn in Group C at the World Cup, Morocco face Brazil on June 13 in New York, Scotland on June 19 in Boston, and Haiti on June 24 in Atlanta.

Spain coach counting on Yamal and Williams fitness for World Cup

MADRID: Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said Tuesday he was counting on wingers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams to be fit and available for the World Cup next month. Yamal, 18, suffered a hamstring injury in late April, which has caused him to miss the rest of the season for Barcelona, though his club have said he should be fit in time for the start of this summer’s showpiece in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Athletic Bilbao’s Williams picked up a muscle injury on Sunday, while Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino is also on the sidelines after breaking his right foot three months ago. “I think that all the players who have been mentioned will be fit and available for the start of the World Cup and I believe for the first match,” De la Fuente told journalists. “But if it’s not for the first match, it would be for the second or third, and it doesn’t cause any major setbacks,” the Spanish coach continued, adding it had been “a very tough year in terms of injuries.” “The world of injuries, which is the tragedy of sport, is what truly keeps us under a lot of pressure, especially in this critical phase because injuries that occur from now on, any minor muscular injury, are really difficult to recover from,” he added. Meanwhile, De la Fuente confirmed that his World Cup squad list will include 26 players but that there would be additional players who would be included for a friendly against Iraq on June 4. Spain’s World Cup opener will be against Cape Verde on June 15 in Atlanta.

World Cup-bound Iraq get FIFA approval for 2 new players from clubs in US and Scotland

ZURICH: World Cup -bound Iraq have two new players for possible selection after FIFA approved eligibility for Nashville SC midfielder Ahmed Qasem and Dundee United defender Dario Naamo. Both comply with FIFA rules for a binding change of national eligibility because of family ties to Iraq. The national team qualified in March for their first World Cup in 40 years despite travel problems during the Middle East conflict. It’s in a tough World Cup group that includes France, Norway and Senegal, who all feature stellar forward in Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland and Sadio Mané. Iraq coach Graham Arnold previously led his native Australia at the 2022 World Cup and now can pick two more players nurtured in Europe. The 22-year-old Qasem was born in Sweden and represented that country at youth level through the Under-21s. He moved to Major League Soccer team Nashville last year from Elfsborg. The 20-year-old Naamo was born in Finland and was still playing for its Under-21 team in March.

Davies injury clouds Canada’s World Cup hopes as defender faces weeks on sidelines

MUNICH: Bayern Munich’s ‌Alphonso Davies will be sidelined for “several weeks” after injuring his left hamstring during their Champions League semifinal second leg against Paris St. Germain, dealing a potential blow to Canada’s World Cup preparations. Davies, who was a second-half substitute against PSG on Wednesday, has ‌struggled with ‌muscle injuries this season ‌and Bayern’s medical team confirmed on Friday that the fullback’s club season was practically over. Davies has made just six Bundesliga starts this season while he has not completed 90 minutes in a match since ‌February. With Bayern ‌knocked out in the Champions League semifinals, ‌the German champions have only ‌three matches left this season, including a Cup final against Stuttgart on May 23. But the timing could hardly ‌be worse for Canada, who are set to co-host the World Cup from June 11.
