Somali referee for World Cup is denied entry into the United States

Somali referee Omar Artan has been denied entry into the United States after getting selected to officiate in the World Cup. US Customs and Border Protection confirmed Monday that a Somali national who was planning to referee in the World Cup had been denied entry after arriving to Miami International Airport from Istanbul on Saturday. While the CBP statement didn’t mention the person by name, Artan is the only World Cup referee from Somalia. “During processing, the traveler underwent additional inspection, a routine part of CBP’s inspection process when officers need to verify information or determine admissibility,” CBP said in its statement.

Germany maintain winning run as Portugal, Belgium claim warm-up victories

BRUSSELS: Germany earned a 2-1 victory over ‌World Cup co-hosts United States in their final warm-up match in Chicago on Saturday, while there were also victories for Portugal and Belgium as teams fine-tune ahead of the tournament’s kickoff next week. It was the ninth win in a row for four-time world champions Germany, who are looking to restore their dented international reputation following shock first-round exits at the 2018 and the 2022 World Cups. The Germans, who suffered a blow when teenager Lennart Karl was ruled out of the World Cup with a muscle injury in training on Friday, took the co-hosts by surprise with a strong start. Kai Havertz found far too much space in the box and headed in Joshua ‌Kimmich’s free kick ‌to give them a second-minute lead. The Americans gradually recovered ‌as the visitors took their foot off the gas, and snatched a stunning equalizer when Antonee Robinson thundered in a volley in the 37th minute after defender Jonathan Tah had headed a corner away. The tables were turned after the break with Germany taking control and Leroy Sane, who came into the starting lineup for the injured Karl, rifled in from 12 meters to put Germany back into the lead in the 57th. The game lost some pace in the second half with both teams making a ‌number of substitutions. Portugal defeated Chile in an ill-tempered ‌clash in Oeiras where both teams finished with 10 men as Rafael Leao and Ivan ‌Roman received their marching orders late in the first half following a brawl. Goncalo ‌Guedes gave the home side the lead before Bruno Fernandes added a second from outside the box.

England leave Foden and Palmer out of World Cup squad

LONDON: England will head to next month’s World Cup without several familiar faces after midfielders Phil Foden and Cole Palmer and defender Trent Alexander-Arnold all missed the cutfor manager Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man squad on Friday. There was a surprise recall, however, for former Brentford striker Ivan Toney despite him playing only seven minutes of international football since Euro 2024. Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo was selected after a return to form in the second half of the season but there was no place for his United teammate Harry Maguire who has been a mainstay of England’s defense in recent tournaments. United’s Luke Shaw also missed out but Manchester City defender John Stones has been selected for his sixth tournament despite making only a handful of league appearances this season. Real Madrid right back Alexander-Arnold has featured only once since Tuchel took charge of England in January 2025 and his omission was not a surprise. Brentford’s veteran ‌midfielder Jordan Henderson, a ‌firm favorite of Tuchel for his leadership qualities, becomes only the second England ‌player to make four World Cup squads after 1966 World Cup winner Bobby Charlton.
