After conceding a huge 100-plus lead, the Rohit Sharma-led side has not been able to dent the New Zealand batting strongly in the second innings. After Washington Sundar's seven-wicket haul helped India restrict New Zealand at 259, the home team could manage only 156 in the first innings. Mitchell Santner picked a seven-wicket haul for the visitors. India's batting, which had collapsed for just 46 in the first innings of the first Test against New Zealand, was criticised by former New Zealand player Ian Smith.

After facing difficulties in finding drinking water on the opening day, fans were in for a better experience on the second day of the second Test between India and New Zealand here with the host association making necessary arrangements at the MCA Stadium. Around one lakh litres of RO water in 20-litre cans was arranged for the second day's play on Friday, well distributed among the booths to avoid the lapse on the first day, an official informed PTI.

The 22-year-old batter surpassed the previous record held by Dilip Vengsarkar, who reached the 1000-run mark at age 23 in 1979. Currently, Jaiswal is second in the list of highest Test run-scorers in 2024, behind England's Joe Root, who has amassed 1305 runs in 14 matches. Jaiswal's form this year has seen him accumulate 1007 runs in just 10 matches, averaging 59.23 with two centuries and six half-centuries.

India captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir faced plenty of criticism as they replaced Kuldeep Yadav with Washington Sundar in the team's playing XI for the second Test against New Zealand. Even India legend Sunil Gavaskar criticised the decision while commentating on the match but Sundar went on to prove everyone wrong. The off-spinner picked up 7 wickets in the innings, with Ashwin claiming the other three as New Zealand were bowled out for 259. With Sundar playing pivotal role for India with the ball, Gambhir couldn't keep calm at the innings break.
