KL Rahul Tests Positive For COVID-19 Ahead Of West Indies Tour, Participation In T20Is Doubtful

KL Rahul, senior India opener, has tested positive for COVID-19. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly informed about Rahul after the Board's Apex Council meeting in Mumbai on Thursday. Rahul underwent a surgery recently and had resumed his training at the NCA in Bengaluru. He was named in the T20I squad for the West Indies tour and supposed to take a fitness in a couple of days. With his COVID test returning positive, it remains to be seen whether he will travel to the West Indies or not. The T20I series starts on July 29 in Tadouba.

The Indian cricket team gets down to action yet again with an ODI against West Indies in Port of Spain on Friday under the leadership of Shikhar Dhawan. India are going into the series after winning the ODI and T20I away series against England. India will play three ODIs and five T20Is agianst West Indies. In the ODI series, senior players like Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested for the ODI series. In their absence senior left-handed opener Dhawan is leading the team. Ahead of the first match, the BCCI released a special message from Dhawan.

India will take on West Indies in the first ODI of the three-match series at the Port of Spain in Trinidad on Friday, July 22. After rounding off a successful tour of England with wins in both T20I and ODI series, India will now look to keep the momentum as they take on the West Indies for three ODIs and five T20Is.. India will be without the Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the ODI series, and the latter will also miss the T20I matches. Shikhar Dhawan will lead the team in Rohit's absence while Ravindra Jadeja has been named his deputy.

KL Rahul has had a torrid run of late. He was supposed to lead India in the T20I series at home against SOuth Africa in June, but was ruled out due to a groin injury. He then underwent a successful surgery for sports hernia in Germany and is now on the road to recovery. Rahul has over the years had recurrent lower abdominal related fitness issues, including groin strains and hamstring injuries. "It's been a tough couple of weeks but the surgery was successful. I'm healing and recovering well. My road to recovery has begun. Thank you for your messages and prayers. See you soon," Rahul had tweeted earlier.

Former India batter Wasim Jaffer wants Ruturaj Gaikwad to make his ODI debut against West Indies in the first game of three-match series at the Port of Spain in Trinidad on Friday. With captain Rohit Sharma being rested and KL Rahul still recovering from his injury, there's no clarity as to who will accompany Dhawan at the top of the order. Highlighting the youngster's excellent form in Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he scored four centuries in five matches, Jaffer feels that Ruturaj deserves a chance to prove his quality. The 44-year-old also pointed out that playing Ruturaj will keep the left-right opening combo intact.

A day ahead of India's first ODI against the West Indies, the visitors wanted to hit the nets. However, the rain Gods had other plans. But instead of waiting around or letting the day go by, the players had an indoors net session. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took to Twitter to share a video with snippets of India's training session. "Gearing up for ODI No.1 against the West Indies," BCCI captioned the video. Batter Shubman Gill appears in the video and explains how they decided to train indoors due to the rain.

"We Have To Bat 50 Overs": West Indies Coach Phil Simmons Ahead Of India ODIs

The West Indies have struggled to bat for full 50 overs in the last couple of years and head coach Phil Simmons said that is one aspect of the game they would look to improve on in the three ODIs against India. To put things into perspective, West Indies have played out 50 overs just six times in 39 innings since the 2019 World Cup, and lost nine of their 13 ODI series since the showpiece event. Simmons' side also faced a humiliating series defeat against Ireland at home earlier this year. The series against India begins on Friday.
