BIRMINGHAM, England : It seems slow and steady can still deliver in test cricket for England as, with all eyes on other free-scoring batters in the Ashes series opener on Friday, a more traditional Joe Root came to his side's rescue once more.
Joe Root ended his Ashes century-drought as England made 393-8 before skipper Ben Stokes's bold declaration on the opening day of the first Test against Australia at Edgbaston on Friday. Cricket's oldest rivalry, Ashes, got off to a grand opening on Friday as England won the toss and opted to bat agaist Australia in the first Test at Edgbaston. England, who last held the Ashes in 2015, suffered a 0-4 thrashing at the expense of their biggest rivals, Australia, during the last meeting between the two side back in 2022. The series defeat marked the end of Joe Root's reign as captain of the Test team. However, since the arrival of Brendon McCullum as head coach, and Ben Stokes stepping in to fill the captaincy boots, England have been the team to beat in Test cricket.
BIRMINGHAM, England : England gave an early indication of whether they would stick to their aggressive new approach to test match cricket as Zak Crawley smashed a four off the opening ball of the Ashes series against Australia at Edgbaston on Friday
