CAUTERETS, FRANCE: Tadej Pogacar unleashed a devastating turn of speed to win stage six of the Tour de France on Thursday, but defending champion Jonas Vingegaard took the overall race lead 25 seconds ahead of the Slovenian.
Two-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar claimed a 10th career stage win at cycling's biggest race on Thursday after launching a stunning counterattack and dropping defending champion Jonas Vingegaard in the finale.
Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard won a tactical battle with key rival Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates as Australian Jai Hindley won Stage 5 of the Tour de France on Wednesday.
Hindley leads Vingegaard with the Dane pulling off a major coup on the final mountain and now has a 53-second advantage on Pogacar in the overall standings, which took a major shake up.
Jasper Philipsen was made to wait to start his celebrations after sprinting to victory on stage three of the Tour de France as Adam Yates retained the yellow jersey in Bayonne.
A tense and highly contested sprint finish in Bayonne was won by Belgium’s Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) ahead of Germany’s Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain-Victorious) and Australia’s Caleb Ewan (Lotto Dstny). But it seemed like an eternity for the result to be confirmed after the race jury studied replays to decide whether Philipsen had veered off his line and boxed out his compatriot Wout van Aert (Jumbo Visma) on the curved home straight in Stage 3.
Wout van Aert says he and his Jumbo-Visma team-mates just «laugh» in the face of reports in the Belgian media of discontent within the team. Van Aert reacted to being beaten on Stage 2 by launching a water bottle to the ground, a moment that added fuel to the fire of those suggesting that chasing GC glory whilst also seeking out stage wins through Van Aert is causing friction within the team.
